MUT in new dispute with MCAST

The Malta Union of Teachers has registered a new industrial dispute with the Malta College of Arts Science and Technology (MCAST) following adverts in the press inviting applications for the post of ICT lecturers.

The MUT said the adverts indicated that successful candidates would be employed on a full-time basis and could benefit from reduced hours.

The MCAST management had refused to include a similar provision for lecturers already in the post during the talks on a collective agreement, the MUT said.

The advert, MUT said, provided for new working conditions for ICT recruits, creating different conditions of work for employees at the same workplace, blatantly breaching the recently signed agreement.

This has got to be the most absurd statement this week! Mr./Ms. Borg which subject, in your opinion is not important and should be dropped? And can you explain the inverted comas in 'teachers' please? Do you propose that there should be different categories of teachers with different pay packages?

If we need to build the national ICT strategy, I honestly think that teachers' wages are far below those given in industry. Good ICT/Computer Studies teachers in secondary schools are leaving to pursuit different careers thereby earning more money. How can the Education Directorate and MCAST attract competent people if they are treated the same as other 'teachers'. I think there needs to be a revision for working conditions dependant on which subject you teach especially those highly regarded as important for the Maltese economy. Mr. Bencini has no right to deny our students from getting 'real' teachers at MCAST with 'real' degrees and experience in teaching!!! This should be encouraged and furthermore enhanced. We should stop treating everyone the same as happened with instructors in secondary state schools who now became known as teachers with same benefits even though they lack professional training and some of them teach subjects they know very little about!!!!!

Mr Bencini of MUT can you give us a break. Your leadrship lacks credibility. First you attack your members during the leadership race (MUT), then you without consultation with the teachers support the GWU in the MDD case, and now once again against the MCAST. You are out of tune with the grassroots. You are risking a no confidence vote.
