I refer to Vincent A. Galea's letter (August 5) and would like to advise that the writing on the Mater Dei emergency services billboard - gravi u urġenti - as a matter of fact is correct.

In Maltese, the conjunction u (and) is always written so, even when it falls between two words where the preceding one ends with a vowel and the one following starts with a vowel. Thus, ħija u oħti or gravi u urġenti (Aġġornament tat-Tagħrif fuq il-Kitba Maltija,1992).
