A four-day strike planned by around 1,000 London Underground maintenance workers this week has been called off after employer Tubelines increased its pay and conditions offer.

Rail union RMT said it would recommend that workers accept the pay offer, reducing the risk of future strikes.

The 72-hour walk-out, scheduled to start at 1100 GMT today and continue into the Bank Holiday weekend, would be suspended while its members voted on the new deal.

"There has been some hard negotiating going on today, and the RMT executive has agreed that the resulting new package that Tubelines has put on the table should be recommended to our members," RMT general secretary Bob Crow said in a statement.

RMT said Tubelines increased its pay offer to a rise of nearly five per cent a year from April this year plus a range of new working conditions.
