A total of 63.7 litres of alcohol and 1,200 cigarettes imported without excise duty having been paid were confiscated last week, the Customs Department said yesterday.

The alcohol was seized in Balzan after a shop owner failed to present the necessary documents when requested.

In a separate case, Customs officers noted a stall holder passing a suspicious package to a customer in a flea market last Sunday. A search of the customer revealed six cigarette boxes containing 200 cigarettes each on which no excise had been paid.
