Ryanair sees record growth on Malta route
Ryanair said today that it carried more than 40,000 passengers from/to Malta in July, a 116 percent increase when compared to July 2007.
It made the announcement as it also announced that it had released two million seats for travel in October for just €5 one way (incl taxes and charges) to Barcelona, Valencia and Venice. These tickets can be booked only on www.ryanair.com for five days until Sunday.
Airline spokesman Alessia Viviani said:
“While Malta airport registered traffic growth of only 1.3 percent in July 2008 compared to July 2007, Ryanair has increased its traffic volume by 116 percent making a vital impact on the Maltese economy. Ryanair is confident that this significant growth will remain strong as Ryanair guarantees the lowest fares and no fuel surcharge ever. Today’s seat sale will see millions of people travel all over Europe during October at the incredible low price of just €5 (incl taxes and charges).
Ryanair said it was strongly advising all passengers to book these €5 seats directly on Ryanair.com and continue to avoid screenscraping/ ticket tout websites which, it said, added rip-off hidden fees of double or treble Ryanair’s low price.

travelling with only hand luggage work out to 10 euros (no taxes) return plus a minimal card fee
travelling with one checked piece of luggage, works out to 40 euros plus card fee

You will end up paying 10 times that to arrive to your final destination (hotel transfer, extra luggage weight/size, insurance just in case Ryanair cancel the flight etc). Also it does not mean that your return flight is 5€. More like it, it will be €50 PLUS taxes if you want to travel on a specific date and you cannot find cheaper seats! Ah, don't forget the transfer back to the airport.
Anyway, it is what it is. Dirt cheap 5€ to go. Counts both ways. Incoming tourists have also been attracted by these pricings. So it's good for Malta in the end.

I travel regularly on business to spain.
I take no luggage. I managed to book with just paying 10 euros.

Get your facts right Mr. Pace, most spanish students that come to malta come through a package called 'BECAS' (subsidised by the Spanish Goverment for Spanish students to learn english in a foreign country). Most of these spanish students came through Air Malta and not through a low cost airline!!!

@Mr. A. Abela: Let's be realistic ... it's ufair to advertise cheap flights costing 5EUR when in reality it all adds up to much more. I requested an online quote to girona in October for 4 days, with one luggage and the total bill amounted to more than 93EUR, and this is without travel insurance ... so i guess it's not that cheap either!

Ryanair have undoubtly brought us more tourists, and also provided us with more routes.
Their adverts might give the wrong impression of a super low cost flight. For example this 5 euro is for the outward flight only. Nonetheless I personally managed to get some bargains by flying ryanair especially on the italian and spanish routes. The UK one is always busy and therefore it will be difficult for us to see some low prices there.
I cannot understand why people continue grumbling about the hidden charges and so on, when before submitting your card details all charges are made known. If you don't like ryanair don't use it! No one is forcing you.

Go for a weekend, take no luggage and pay with VISA electron.
The cost is 5 euros in certain days if you do it this way. 10 euros return.
If you want luggage pay and extra 30 euros, and if you don't have a visa electron pay a further 10 euros. But its possible to travel at just 10 euros return so comments like those of Mr. Pulis are unfair on the world's favourite and cheapest airline.

I guess any airline will carry more passengers if they serve more destinations. However I will continue my battle to be able to fly to ALL destinations available to the general public. If I wish to fly to the UK i can only do so by BA and only to Gatwick - why? because I am blind and use a Guide Dog. Air Malta may have agreed to make an exception, after extreme pressure, to carry catia from Milan but they have not announced plans to make this general and especially to comply with extra regulations for the UK and Irish Republic.
We will continue to lobby and offer help to the airline staff so that they will comply.
ps I cannot travel by RyanAir to the UK either.

Yes they always say London, Barcelona etc, heqq Lotun is in London, Girona is in Barcelona but 1hr or more far from the city :) What I really don't understand is that most people do not calculate the extra costs involved when travelling to these airports and other similar to these. As long as they have paid a cheap flight, they think they did a good bargain. Often British Airways, Easy Jet and AirMalta are cheaper overall to fly with. ClickAir is also cheaper sometimes to fly with if you really want to go to Barcelona.
Although I am not at all against Ryan Air since I also use Ryan Air and I am a frequent flyer, use your head when planning your flight and calculate ALL Costs - flight cost + travelling costs to your final destination + whether it involves an extra night hotel charge! At Lotun it lands at 0.00am, thus this involves at least 60Sterling Hotel + 15Sterling Taxi extra to your flight cost.
I really lough when I hear people saying "I got the flight for 40Euros" and "where are you going??" - "Oxford street!!!!" - "Ahh yes the other side of london then".

Please note that Barcelona was mentioned again as an MT-ES Ryanair route. The final destination is Girona!!

Definitly these low cost have given a boost to our tourism. Look how many spanish tourists we have around this year due to the low costs operating to / from Spain! Welldone!
