Fourth cyclist drops out of LifeCycle challenge

A fourth cyclist from the HSBC LifeCycle challenge team yesterday dropped out because of a knee injury.

The cyclist called it a day in the morning shortly after the group embarked on the 210-kilometre route which is taking the 70-strong team from Teruel to Albacete in Spain.

Two other cyclists dropped out because of knee injuries on Monday while another stopped because of severe migraine on Sunday.

The 31 remaining cyclists had to deal with hot weather hitting 46˚C, although a slight breeze was mitigating the effects of the sun as the team entered the Sierra Nevada, LifeCycle's Karen Zammit said.

On Monday the cyclists, accompanied by a 35-strong back-up support, made the 146 kilometres route from Alcaniz to Teruel, a relatively short stretch that was made tougher by a strong wind and hilly terrain.

Today the challenge will see the team cycling 256 kilometres from Albacete to Jaèn. The challenge, from Lourdes to Casablanca, is in aid of the Renal Unit at Mater Dei Hospital.
