Roma president Franco Sensi has died aged 82 at the Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital in Rome, the Serie A club said on Sunday.

Rival teams Juventus, Inter and Milan all paid tribute to him on their websites.

Sensi, president of the club for 15 years, had been ill for some time. His daughter Rosella is chief executive.

Petrol magnate Sensi took over at Roma in November 1993 and presided over a very successful period. Under his command, Roma won the league in 2000-01, two Italian Super Cups in 2001 and 2007 and lifted the Coppa Italia in 2006-07 and 2007-08.

Lehmann leaves good impression

Former Arsenal and Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was singled out for praise by his new boss Armin Veh after helping Stuttgart clinch a season-opening 3-1 Bundesliga win at newly promoted Borussia Moenchengladbach on Sunday.

Stuttgart, the 2007 Bundesliga champions, relied on great reactions from Lehmann to hold on to the three points.

"It was a really good game of football," Veh said. "The important thing was that we had a very good keeper in our goal otherwise Borussia could have also had at least one goal in the first half."

Lehmann gave a more modest assessment of Sunday's game.

"It was okay, I think," he told reporters.

"At my age it's not so important anymore if you play fantastically or a bit less well."

Nasri joins France squad

Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri has been added to France's squad for tomorrow's friendly against Sweden after Olympique Marseille's Hatem Ben Arfa pulled out, the French Football Federation said.

Nasri, 21, who joined Arsenal from Marseille this season and was replaced by Ben Arfa, has scored twice in 12 internationals.

He marked his debut for the London side on Saturday by scoring the winning goal against West Bromwich Albion.

Ben Arfa, who joined Marseille from seven-times champions Olympique Lyon, was substituted late in his side's 4-0 victory over Auxerre, complaining of a groin strain.

The match will be staged in Gothenburg.

Rangers sign Edu from Toronto

Rangers have signed US midfielder Maurice Edu on a five-year contract subject to a work permit.

The Scottish Premier League club said that they had paid Major League Soccer five million dollars for the Toronto player, who was named last year's MLS Rookie of the Year.

The midfielder, 22, watched Saturday's 2-0 Premier League win over Hearts at Ibrox, before agreeing personal terms.

Edu has six full international caps after coming through the youth ranks. He has now returned to his homeland to prepare for a World Cup qualifier in Guatemala, along with new club-mate DaMarcus Beasley.

Bojinov ruptures tendon

Manchester City's Bulgaria striker Valeri Bojinov faces a probable six-month absence after rupturing his right achilles tendon.

Bojinov sustained the injury during the warm-up before Sunday's

4-2 defeat at Aston Villa. City manager Mark Hughes described it as a "huge blow" for the player, who was preparing for his first start since injuring knee ligaments last August.

"It is a huge blow for Valeri," Hughes told reporters.

"He has had a terrible spell with injury. We are all disappointed for him but he will have to come back again."

Rovers to bid for Grella

Blackburn Rovers are leading the race ahead of Fulham to sign Vincenzo Grella, the Australian midfielder who played for Torino in the Serie A last season.

Grella, who also had a stint with Parma, had been strongly linked with a transfer to Fulham this month. But Tuttosport yesterday said that Blackburn are now heading the queue after meeting Torino's £4m asking price.

Grella is in London to play for Australia in a friendly against South Africa today. He is using that trip to finalise details with Blackburn.

Tuttosport said Grella has already undergone his final training session with Torino and has his bags packed.

Redknapp staying at Pompey

Harry Redknapp said media reports linking him with a return to West Ham United was mere speculation even though he added that he had received some offers.

The pressure is seemingly on manager Alan Curbishley at Upton Park and he is one of the early favourites to be the first Premier League boss to lose his job this season.

West Ham opened their league account on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Wigan, but despite that reports still insisted that the club were on the lookout for possible replacements.

Redknapp turned down a move to Newcastle last year and he will not be tempted to leave Fratton Park for West Ham this summer.

He said: "I am not interested in going anywhere else. I have had some offers before but I am happy where I am."
