Customs officers have seized six cartons of 200 cigarettes each from a Monti hawker on suspicion that no excise duty was paid on them, the Customs Department said today.

The cigarettes were seized on Sunday after an officer noticed the hawker handing over a suspect packet to a client.

The department said that last week it also confiscated alcohol from a Balzan establishment after it found that no excise duty had been paid.
