Premier League newcomers Qormi FC paraded their new signings last weekend during a promotional activity at the Casino Portomaso, St Julian's.

Qormi earned the right to play in the Premier League via the play-offs but intend to prolong their stay in the top flight by more than one year.

This summer they have been active on the transfer market and signed no fewer than 10 new players to strengthen the squad, again trusted in the hands of experienced coach Jesmond Zerafa.

Those present were addressed by Qormi FC vice president Redeno Apap.

He said his club are back in the Premier League for the first time after almost 30 years and, under the presidency of Matthew Fenech, they do not intend to stay out of the limelight for another lengthy period.

"Our main objective in our first year in the Premier League is to avoid the drop and preserve our status among the elite clubs at the end of the season.

"Anything else will be a bonus for us," Apap said.

Qormi have a list of potential backers assisting the club but Apap urged the fans to give their support this season.

Qormi's main sponsor will be Casino Portomaso and the Tumas Group.

"I would publicly like to thank all our sponsors, the main ones and the others whose contribution is also significant to our club," Apap said.

"However, I am also urging the fans to give their whole backing even when things are not going the way we want them to. This will be a difficult season for us but we're confident this will be a satisfactory year for us as well."

Brazilian newcomers

Among the new players in Zerafa's squad are Brazilians Josevan Alves De Silva and Ramon Dos Santos; Alfred Effiong (ex-Ħamrun), Chucks Nwoko (ex-Sliema), Keith Fenech, Massimo Grima and Renie Forace (all former Valletta players), goalkeeper Reuben Gauci and Shaun Tellus (ex-Marsaxlokk), and former Birkirkara defender Roderick Sammut.

Zerafa said: "We know all eyes will be on our team as the season gets underway.

"The club has brought in new players and we intend to stay in the Premier League at the end of the season.

"That puts a lot of pressure on us, particularly the new signings. They have to live up to their billing and show their true worth.

"But, I'm convinced that Qormi will be up to the task and reach most of our goals."

Qormi start their 2008/09 Premier League campaign with a tough match against Marsaxlokk on Sunday.
