NCW calls for breast cancer action programme
The Council of Women has called for priority to be given to a national action plan on prevention and treatment of breast cancer, in line with WHO standards.
In comments on the pre-budget document, the council said it supported the government’s commitment to a comprehensive strategy to tackle cancer and the proposed breast cancer screening services for women in the 50-59 age bracket and for women at high risk.
"However, the Council believes that early detection measures for younger women and extending the services beyond the age of 59 should be a national priority which can offer vast opportunities for a better quality of life for women of all ages."
It said the action plan should be based on effective education, prevention and treatment measures.

"Cancer was the last thing on my mind."
I am a survivor of Colorectal cancer (CRC). I am 53 years old and I have 2 beautiful children and a wonderful family in Malta.
If detected early enough, CRC is one of the most curable types of cancer, with a 90-percent survival rate.
Testing is critical, because by the time there are warning signs, it may be in a later stage and more difficult to treat. I had no history in my family of cancer and I had no sign of cancer.
In Canada, tests such as mammograms (age 40) & colonoscopies (from age 50) are now routine tests & are part of our public health consciousness and standard care.
Some people are hesitant to get a colonoccopy They are either afraid, embarrassed, or don't want to go through the trouble. It's easier than getting your teeth cleaned."
I hope my experience will encourage people to get colonoscopies done.
It saved my life!!! "If you haven't had a colonoscopy, please do"
