Updated: MLP calls for climate change White Paper
Ministry says proposed committee already exists
(Adds ministry's statement)
The Labour Party has urged the government to publish a White Paper on Climate Change and to set up a committee of experts to prepare legislation on the subject.
Party environment spokesman Leo Brincat said the aim of future legislation should include the setting of emission reduction targets and ways to achieve them, and the introduction of a mechanism for parliament to be informed of progress towards those targets.
Legislation should also make it incumbent on the government to identify the impact of climate change on Malta holistically and at sectoral level, as in the case of tourism, illegal migration, agriculture and water resources.
The Resources Ministry in a reaction to Mr Brincat’s statement said the committee the Labour spokesman had proposed already existed and was drawing up a plan on how Malta would reduce greenhouse gases.
The committee includes experts from the ministry, MEPA, the Malta Resources Authority, the ADT, the university, Enemalta, the private sector and NGOs.
As announced when the committee was set up, once the committee submitted its report a public discussion would be held.

@ Angelo Micallef
" the committee he is proposing is in fact in the process of being set up"
- Oh Yes , Really? !! A good One !!!
Maybe similar to the pharmacy of your choice or maybe the scheme for the first time buyers or even maybe the promised tax bands promised prior the election from Mr. Par Idejn Sodi!!
Wake Up Mr. Angelo Micallef !!
I ask both big parties (MLP and PN) to come up with proposals to work on this, but proposals which make sense and which can be lead to real projects and legislation.
Why has MLP been so quiet about the environment issues? You hear a word here and a word there, but noone wants to give a clear statement about the party's position.
In these issues MLP and PN are the same it seems.
Progress: No.
