Tony Fava asked Is Hunting Season Open Yet? (August 11).

No, it's not open yet, but I would like him to know that not only hunters shoot birds. In his case surely, they are not hunters, because hunters do not need pigeons. Pigeons are not good to eat because of the medicines they are fed, and they are not rare, so they are not stuffed to keep as trophies.

As he said, it's true that they spend thousands of euros to keep them and medicate them but did pigeon racers ever wonder how much money farmers spend to buy seeds, plant and cultivate them? Did anyone ever have an expensive outfit on the roof to dry and pigeons spoiled it?

Pigeons eat seeds and, therefore, farmers consider pigeons as pests. Farmers lose out if pigeons are left to eat seeds from farmed land.
