Charlene Attard placed sixth in the qualifying heats of the women's 100 metres yesterday.

The Pembroke sprinter, on her first Olympic participation, took the starting blocks of the tenth and final heat and dashed home in 12.20 seconds. Her time was 0.27 seconds slower than her own national record of 11.93 she set last year.

Jamaica's Kerron Stewart won the heat in 11.28 ahead of Norway's Ezinne Okparaebo (11.32) and Virgin Islands' LaVerne Jones-Ferrette (11.41). Haiti's Barbara Pierre (11.52) and Russia's Natalia Murinovich (11.55) also qualified to the second round despite finishing outside the top three as their times were among the next 10 fastest overall.

Sierra Leone's Michael Kargbo (12.54), Montenegro's Milena Milasevic (12.65) and Nepal's Chandra Kala Thapa (13.15) were the other runners in heat no.10.

Meanwhile, Malta's participation in Beijing continues today when Nicolai Portelli, the remaining Maltese in competition, takes part in the qualifying rounds of the men's 200 metres.
