Lifecycle: Spanish police try to stop cyclists
Spanish police have tried to stop participants in the HSBC LifeCycle Challenge from cycling during the weekend, arguing that the roads are too dangerous. The problem, has, however, been sorted after "hours of persuasion" and the challenge is continuing, the organisers said.
The 18 cyclists left Lourdes yesterday and are currently cycling through the Sierra Nevadas in Spain on their way to Morocco.
The organisers insisted that the planned route was considered to be safe since minor roads were chosen purposely. The Spanish police relented on condition that the team split up into individual cyclists.
The organisers said a cyclist had to stop due to severe migraine. The support doctor reported that this was caused due to the extreme cold weather encountered whilst crossing the Pyrenees.
The team is travelling through picturesque villages with the support team busily setting up route signs to make sure the cyclists remain on the well defined track.
The challenge, now in its tenth year, is being held to raise funds for the renal unit at Mater Dei Hospital. Donations can be sent via SMS on the following numbers: ·
