Fino's ongoing campaign to promote Malta's hidden heritage takes us to the steps of ancient Vittoriosa. One cannot help but notice the centuries-old building that houses Amabile Galea and Sons, an enterprise that has been producing wrought iron products since World War II. Stepping inside the building is like stepping back in time, as intricate metal designs take material form in the smouldering forges.
Once used as a food warehouse by the Knights of St John, the vault is deceptively cool despite the scorching summer air and the fiery furnace within. It is here, the usual place, that Gaetano Galea, the 63-year-old metal worker, Fino's featured craftsman for August is usually found.
Amabile, Gaetano's father, was born and bred in Zejtun. It was there that he had his first encounter with metal working and instantly loved the trade. During World War II Amabile served as a blacksmith for the British Army and it was immediately after this time that he started a family and founded a wrought iron company at the same time. Gaetano is Amabile's eldest son and together with his brothers John and Anthony, he has followed in his father's footsteps by preserving an old trade that is fast becoming extinct in many parts of the world.
Gaetano's dedication to quality and the preservation of a fine traditional art form are values that Fino shares and holds in the highest respect. He has thus been selected to form part of Fino's illustrious list of featured craftsmen.
