Skips destroyed in fire

Vandals last night lit a mattress which was dumped near two skips in Triq R. Caruana Dingli, San Ġwann, destroying the skips in the process, the locality’s council said.

It said the fire did not spread to the rest of the garden where the skips are located only thanks to the timely intervention of the Civil Protection Department.

The council said there was regular abuse of the 200 skips it had put up in San Ġwann with the dumping of bulky waste such as mattresses, construction material and chairs. This was despite the council’s twice weekly bulky waste collection service.

Vandals were also destroying road signs, the council said. It appealed for more patrols and for vandalism to be reported.

Maltese culture at its best. The important thing is that our homes are clean, but when it comes to beyong our front gate......who cares?! It's no man's land!

Install CCTV cameras and catch the culprits. Who gets caught pays the dole.

Stories like this are so depressing.

Malta is a lovely island and many are doing so much to make it look and be an even better place to live. Then you have a few totally inconsiderate litter louts too lazy to call for FREE bulk rubbish collection and even those that are too lazy to lift the lids of a skip to put their rubbish inside the skip (even when the skip is empty), that totally destroy the efforts of many.

Perhaps it is time for the use of portable CCTV which with the assistance of residents living close to the skip locations could be requested from time to time to allow the temporary use of their property to mount random monitoring of an area that is known for abuse. As the vandals and litter louts would not know when they are installed, they may re-think their actions.

.......and the story does not end here ......

I like the way fresh garbage has just been dumped onto the remains of the skip.
