Better utilisation of resources discussed in Gozo tourism meeting
The Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Mario de Marco, has called for closer collaboration between the Malta Tourism Authority, the tourism secretariat and the Ministry for Gozo in order to maximise the utilisation of resources for the benefit of Gozo’s tourism industry.
Commenting at a meeting in Gozo with Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, he emphasised the importance of the proper maintenance of beaches and country walk paths as well as the need for an efficient transport system, particularly when cruise liner mooring facilities are introduced.
The meeting discussed issues related to the sustainable development of Gozo’s tourism product.
The discussion focused on aspects such as the upkeep of beaches, rural areas, historical sites, niche markets, transport and traffic management.
The minister gave an overview of tourism related projects carried out through partial financing under the European Structural Fund Programme for Malta 2004-2006.
These included the building of a new facility for tourism studies in Gozo, the installation of a hyperbaric unit at Gozo General Hospital, the diving masterplan for Gozo and Comino, the scuttling of vessels for the creation of artificial dive sites as well as a masterplan for the conservation, preservation and management of the Citadel.
Those present, who also included Josef Formosa Gauci, CEO at the MTA, also discussed the integration of tourism with the eco-island concept.

It is about time that this government stopped making promises (remember the "Gozo is a Jewel" reference by the Prime Minister?), and took action by assigning money and resources to help put Gozo on the map. Heretofore, Gozo has always been looked upon and treated as 'Malta's poorer sister island'

Never cease to be amazed by these politicians.On one hand they want to protect Gozo's natural resources and on the other they want to the destruction one of the most popular beaches on Gozo.. Hondoq ir-Rummien by considering an application for a Marina to be built down there that would effectively change the character of this beautiful spot and render it no longer viable for bathing. Makes me wonder whose interest these people represent anyway. Wish they would take a quick visit down there and see for themselves how many enjoy what Hondoq has to offer every single day..They certainly seem to me that they are in the wrong profession if they don't give a hoot about preserving Hondoq..

How about using more 'human resource' in gozo. Especially from the hundreds that have been boarded out.

Although the idea of turning Gozo an Eco-Island is good ....I am afraid that it cannot be attained unless poaching on birds halts by proper policing since Gozo is notorious for such bird offences but also good to mention the illegal disposal of building debris on garigue and the famous "private roads" dotting the countryside!!
