A second group of illegal migrants is being brought to Malta, raising the number of arrivals so far today to 56.
The first group of 28 was brought to Haywharf this morning by an AFM patrol boat. It consisted of 23 men and five women.
Their boat was located by an Italian fishing boat 48 miles off Malta.
The second group, of 26 men and two women, was intercepted by a patrol boat four miles off Ghar Lapsi. The AFM said the migrants were fighting and arguing among themselves, causing their boat to take in water. As a result another patrol boat and a rescue launch were sent to the scene.

Do not be discouraged about a demo. A well attended one will serve its purpose, no matter what the government and the others will say.
But to be effective, it will have to be complemented with the first language politicians understand. The ballot. There is no pressure without it. Attending a protest where the present decision-makers will say "Let them let off some steam, they will vote for us anyways", may be next to useless. Of course, for those who think this is a priority issue.
The State have abandoned us, it deserves reciprocity. MLPN is part of the State institution. Presently the ball is in the government court, and there is much more that he can do that he is not doing. But he is taking the easy way out. A '1' near any box of these 2 parties is nothing short of an approval. Be creative with it.

@ Denis Catania - Yes you do need a permit, but that is not the only thing you need. You need funds to promote the demo. Than more importantly you need attendance, I personally have attended both the National demos organized by ANR, how about the persons who complain day in day out on this site. Where they in Valletta standing up to be counted like me and my friends where?
Oh and I hope that if one gets the opportunity to be interviewed in a vox pop, no matter how condescending the person holding the mike is, don’t shy away from telling the truth about how you really feel regarding this situation, as I've noticed that many are those who wont admit their true feelings for fear of being labelled a racist. Don’t succumb to any mind games, we the citizens have to stand up for our right to a peaceful future, as it is very clear that our politicians are only in for the perks of their job.

Ivan Attard, you are right, you guys need a mass rally. You guys need to do something fast. I'm thinking about coming to Malta in October. Ivan can me and you start something. Are permits needed? I'm ready. I ready to come and help organize. Malta needs us.

Malta turning into 'detention centre', warns minister
6th July, 2007
". . . . Critics also point out that the EU's border agency, known as Frontex, has had a difficult time in providing boats and helicopters even for the limited operations so far, with only 20 boats and four helicopters at its disposal.
Frontex had been promised 115 boats, 25 helicopters and 23 planes plus a variety of other technical equipment by this April but so far only six out of 27 member states – Malta, Greece, Spain, Italy, France and Germany – have made contributions."
So, useless bitching about it this summer lads: raise your pint to a sleepy FRONTEX, an inept Maltese government, and backbroken AFM soldiers at sea running a water taxi service!

@ Kenneth Galea
I do not think Dr Muscat is in a position to take remedial action. At most, all he can do is to raise questions in parliament, but that could only backfire on him and his party. He is young, but he is not stupid, at least not as much as he seems to be.
The one who can and who has the duty to act is the one who is in authority, namely, Dr Gonzi. My impression is that Dr Gonzi is giving in to Church authorities, not just the Church in Malta, but also Christian denominations all across Africa. Do not forget that these churches are the ones who are spearheading this movement, paying monies to human traffickers on behalf of these people, and instructing these people to claim asylum upon arrival. Dr Gonzi, being a church person himself, is very much a weakling in the face of these movements. But even going by what has already happened thus far, it is hard to see how he is going to come out of this situation. He was elected by the people, but he is serving the churches. That makes neither political nor economic sense.

@S Bonnici
Mr Bonnici you are indeed spot on. Dom Mintoff would have tackled this issue spot on, he really meant it when he used to say 'Malta first and before everything'. Minftoff would not have put up with this and he would not have given a toss about what the human right organisations, the EU or the UN say. Indeed I agree with some readers here that there is no point anymore voicing our concerns on here as nothing is done about it. I also emailed the leader of the opposition a couple of months ago about this serious problem of illegal immigration. He replied and informed me that action would be taken by his party. No action from his party so far but maybe Mr Muscat also wants to be politically correct like Dr Gonzi.

@Mark Zerafa
Thank you very much for voting in a government that stays silent while my beloved islands are capriociously invaded through an organised racket. Call him maverick as much as you like, but Dom MIntoff would have tackled this issue head on, not smiled and danced while Rome was burning. To keep shaming this beleaguered nation furthemore, yesterday we had the graduation ceremony of students in search and rescue.
Other than the welcomed U.S. Ambassador, guess who was present? The Libyan ambassador. Libya, the country that is non-committed to our plight and would even retrieve a boat of 120 illegal immigrants that were still in Libyan waters!
This nation is crying out loud for Maltese genuine, serious politicians of all political convictions to come forward and save its soul. Where are the sons of Malta when we really need them?

What is the use of adding comments. Why doesn't everyone give up and save one's precious time. As if Government cares anymore about this predicament. MP's seats are secure now. Ever heard of Pontius Pilate? History repeats itself they say and ours is a case in point.
Do we ever hear how Government is constructively trying to check this invasion. . .hardly. Problem sharing with EU countries is just a joke as is the Frontex mission. But Dr Gonzi is happy quoting these mild deterrents to appease us.
Not to mention those human traffikers who are more than happy cashing in on this situation.

I have finally concluded that we are wasting precious time pleading for the inept authorities to act. There is simply no governance to protect us from this deluge and the 'opposition' is living in another dimension. What is needed is a strong demonstration and street rallies by any other party who took this matter as an issue at the last election. The time is NOW and to hell with what the NGO's and african-huggers think. They have long ceased to be irrelevant to the nightmare scenario we are about to wake up to.

Soon, the majority will be forced to declare themselves racist. that is the only way to get the authorities on their toes. I used to feel insulted when someone said I'm a racist but now I don't feel disturbed at all.if by racist it is meant that you see the danger we're facing then so be it. I'd rather be branded a racist than bury my head in the sand and pretend that being christian is going to solve all my problems. in fact being christian IS exacerbating the problem

Surely, the "Powers to be" must act now, not later but now, never mind what the EU says, the Authorities must organise themselves and start sending them back. Most countries in Europe wants to do that.
Apart from that, we have enough unemployment as it is, set aside that, these people, they will soon start demanding their rights to work etc... including voting, ahhhh, maybe this what the politicians want, FLOATING VOTES!!!! to straighten their hold in politics

Guess the PN propaganda before the referendum got it wrong. We did join the EU to become part of Africa after all.
Our Goverment is a disgrace, the whole parlament knows that with this passive stance we are keeping the EU happy at our expense. How many more illegal immigrants will we take before this country breaks under the enormous pressure? More importantly what will happen once this occurs, will our concern turn to anger and rage?
I’ve said this before, by taking this passive stance our Government is inciting hatred towards these illegal immigrants, and in a few years time when our country will be bursting at the seams, when unemployment will be rampant and our social services will sky rocket as a result, peace in this country will be a thing of the past.
Shame on our authorities for the lack of foresight, and shame on us for letting the authorities get away with such poor governance.

Is there a gold medal for search and rescue operations for the AFM, because I think they deserve one?
Also shouldn't the rest of Europe and NATO come to our aid now that Malta is again a full member in Partnership for Peace? Or is a quiet invasion by stealth doesn't qualify us for assistance. Maybe we should go and blast our way to Libya and stop the boats from leaving. Then will see what NATO and the rest of the pathetic pundits in Brussels will do?

At the risk of being called 'inhuman or racist' - is there no limit to the number of illegal immigrants that Malta can take on ? Should we not put our foot down and say Malta can absorb so many and not more ? Obviously I do not agree that we should let them drown but government with the help of the opposition should come up with other solutions. Someone somewhere is making millions of Euro out of this illegal immigration business and we should strive to see who is gaining most from this situation. Also, what about the security of the island - anyone can just land here it seems.

What was one of the reasons the Government gave why Malta re-joined the PFP? Wasn't it "Intelligence Sharing" with the US and EU Agencies? Then what about using one of their dozens of surveylance satellites over the Med for a week to pinpoint and identify the SHIPS that are giving "piggy-back" rides to all these boats that are arriving to our shores. Oh! One more thing...is it just my impression, or are these boats all of the same brand/product? As the old adage goes, "Follow the money, kid...follow the money"! That is, if anyone CARES/WANTS to put a halt to this invasion under the guise of "refugee" status.

I am surprised actually that they don't bring along family pets as well. The south of malta has already become part of africa, we might as well invest in some wildlife to go along with it.

This is the second group of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS landing on our shores today, Dr. Gonzi!! Are you not as alarmed as the rest of us?
Robert Dimech
Aug 13th 2008, 13:23
Since the second group's boat was only taking in water due to the scuffling taking place, was it really necessary to haul them ashore? Sheer waste of resources, sending another patrol boat and a rescue launch to pick up argumentative illegals we should do well without.

Once immigrants are brought to land, do the authorities try to establish what system/network/racket is behind all this? The immigrants should help the Maltese authorities in this matter. We cannot go on like this, with one or two boatloads of immigrants coming every day!
