Trees enhance residents' well-being
Albert Gauci Cunningham wrote about the need for trees in Hompesch Road (August 5).
In the past, trees were massacred and chopped down to make way for the new pavements in Hompesch and Żabbar Roads, Fgura.
The fichus trees were uprooting some of the tiles and entering into some people's homes.
But they were never replaced! All that is left now is just an ugly street! And Fgura has one of the highest respiratory problems in the world.
I was really amazed to see that in the same locality, precisely in Triq ir-Rihan, there are so many beautiful olive trees planted. This road is living proof that this experiment with trees has worked; it has upgraded the beauty of the road and gives a sense of well-being to the residents.
Planting olive trees in Żabbar Road and Hompesch Road will surely reduce the pollution by a small fraction, but will definitely give a better aesthetic look! Concerned authorities take action now please!

Yes, I too remember the trees along the main road at Fgura. They were mature ficus trees which gave lots of shade and must have kept both the noise and the fumes at bay for those who lived and worked along that road. It was amazing that the local council destroyed the beautiful boulevard trees sometime in the 90s, as Mr Grech notes, when the pavements were relaid. What a terrible shame. Here in Munich, you consider yourself lucky to live in a tree-lined street. I certainly do.

Tree contribute to micro climate. We should keep in mind that most of the heat we have in malta is due to the lack of tree we have. Tree produce shade and help to keep a lower constant temperature. Apart from that i believe that the maltese should have more respect for trees. It is a recurring problem here in malta that when we pave our streets we damage most of the trees in the surrounds with our equipment. Most of these trees are older then any of us and deserve respect. Trees normally damage building because of the way we build pavements. If the roots dont find enough air they start going up to look for air and damage both houses and pavements. It is important that enough space is left around the tree for the roots to breathe and not have bricks or concrete all around the base of the tree. If trees are damaging buildings that should be transplanted somewhere else instead of being cut down. Some trees are 300 years old and as I said deserve our respect.
