Somali in court over Khat

A 43-year-old Somali man was yesterday remanded in custody after he pleaded not guilty to trafficking and possessing the drug Khat.

The accused, Mohamed Abdala Haybe, currently resides in London.

Police Inspector Victor Aquilina prosecuted.

Passport officers cannot know about nationals origine as they do not check passports if flight or vessel is comming from europe or schengen country. A big problem accoutered nowadays at the airport.

Khat is widely used in that region and is not banned at all (Ethiopia, Yemen, Somalia and Djibouti). 95% of the population take it and is considered a social event (men and women gather around in separate rooms in the early afternoon around 3 PM). It is also consumed during ceremonial activities, eg business orpolitical meetings.

Khat is banned in Europe, USA and Saudi Arabia. Some countries tolerate the use of khat for personal use (due to ethnic traditions)

Passport Officers should inform the criminal investigation section immediatley upon any somali or persons from that region, arrive from europe , especially from london /belgium/holland so surveillance may be kept. Prevention is better than cure (jail)
