Minister announces EU funds for agriculture
The European Union is allocating €100 million for agriculture in Malta for the period 2007 to 2013 and applications for assistance may be submitted by farmers in October, Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino said.
He told a news conference that the funds could be used for various purposes, including the modernisation of structures to EU standards (€13.5 million), investments in quality products (€7 million), for the restoration of rubble walls (€5 million), agro-tourism (€12 million) and the marketing and processing of products (€7 million).
The minister was speaking at Meridiana wine estates in Ta’ Qali which between 2004 and 2006 benefitted from €22,000, amounting to 50 per cent of its capital expenses on tanks, a water recycling plant, and a pilot project for photovoltaics.

I am very pleased that Minister Pullicino announced the above. The above funds form part of the 2007-2013 Rural Development Programme and entails the setting up of the Local Action Group. Government must ensure that all departments have the required capacity to implement such EU programes and should be provided with the competent staff complement.
The Local Councils' Association has already, since August 2007, set up the National Rural Development Agency. This was launched publicly on 8th May 2008.
We appeal to the private sector (commercial and NGO's) to become memers of the NRDA as together we can achieve more. The Leader Approach envisages the valorisation of the rural areas and the upgrading/renovation of our rural heritage. We want the public sector to be part of this economic vehicle in order to attain better results in our challenges.
On my part I would like to thank all Local Councils and private entities that have already become members of the NRDA. A meeting will be held on the 28th August and information will be submitted to all members by the end of this week.
