MEPA declares buffer zone near Villa Bologna

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) has declared the area known as Ta’ Fġieni in Attard as a scheduled buffer zone, in a move which it said is meant to conserve the vistas of Villa Bologna, its gardens and the surrounding boundary wall.

MEPA said that in the buffer zone, which includes both Triq Lorenzo Manche and Triq il-Għenba it will now only allow restricted development for buildings not exceeding 2 floors from street level. Both streets abut Villa Bologna and its gardens.

The Authority said it took a similar position when it approved the scheduling of a buffer zone to safeguard the visual integrity of the Lija Belvedere Tower and its surroundings. No buildings are permitted to exceed two floors from street level within that buffer zone area.

"MEPA remains committed to implementing sustainable development principles and practices that ensure a better quality of life for today’s citizens and safeguards the natural and cultural heritage for future generations," the Authority said.

Yes nice one Mepa. However unless I'm mistaken wasn't it FAA who made this suggestion in the first place?

Nice one MEPA. Good start. We need more buffer zones in all towns and villages. Property developers' interests should be placed quite well down the list of Malta's priorities, while true environment planning should be pushed up to the top of the list.
