A contract has been signed with a consortium of French and Italian companies for the construction of the south sewage treatment plant, which will be the island's largest and allow Malta to comply with the EU's Urban Wastewater Directive.

The plant will treat the sewage of the south and central areas and tie up all the major south wastewater projects, the Water Services Corporation said yesterday.

These include the Marsa sewage infrastructural project, the Rinella pumping station, the Xgħajra pumping station that will also cater for SmartCity infrastructural needs, the Barkat effluent outfall and the eventual decommissioning of the Wied Għammieq outfall and the Sant'Antnin sewage treatment plant.

The project is expected to alleviate the current problem experienced from time to time at the harbour area where the old transmission network is being overloaded, WSC said.

The contract is between the corporation and Consortium Degremont/CCC/CMR.

Messrs Degremont of France are the lead partners in the consortium and are among the world leaders in this field of technology. CCC/CMR are the Italian civil construction partners who have experience in construction of similar sized structures.
