Crane topples over, concrete block crashes onto cars

A block of concrete fell on two cars this morning when a crane toppled over in High Street, Qormi.

The incident happened at around 10 a.m.

The crame came to rest against the facade of a residence. No one was injured.

The police are investigating.

I'm fairly sure these cranes each have a safety limit - a weight they should not exceed. So why do we still get so many cranes toppling over? Are such limits enforced?

Watching a particular station's news bullettin this evening, I was appalled to see that the person in charge of the crane had the termerity to physically threaten the cameraman taking the shots. This accident happened in a public area, a street, and so the cameraman and the crew had every right to film what had happened.
The intimidating action of the person in charge is to be condemned. It is about time that this country rid itself of these pseudo-machos who think that they are above the law, either due to their 'physique' or to their tempers or to the connections that they might have. Enough is enough!

Cranes are a health hazard to pedestrians. Accidents do happen, but authorities should be more strict. Fortunately no one got hurt, for otherwise it would have been unacceptable for someone to get hurt (or even worse) out of the clumsiness of others.

As far as I know cranes (an uglifying eyesore) are a temporary thing. Once the work is ready, it will have to be dismantled

@P Debono, most of these seem to employ foreigners, so it will not be such an impact on the employment.

Fortunately, this 'demolish-rebuilt' craze seem to have dwindled.

@ J Farrugia - Personally, I would rather have the State supporting them, then having them continuing the ruin and rape of our country with their so-called development activity!

But Mr P Debono, these contractors have to work. They have employees. Shall we send everyone home so that you won't have cranes towering in your area. I also have a tall crane behind my yard. So what. Shall we stop them. and send them registering for work????

It is inevitable not to take these issues with a pinch of salt nowadays as they have become the order of the day. Malta definitely ranks as one of the top countries where we have many laws for a lot of things but which are not enforced. I can come up with a multitude of contraventions taking place on a daily basis on such building sites but with inspections being few and far away, they are left to take place.........

Do you still see open air chasing taking place with dust blown with the wind?
Do you still see overloaded trucks forming a trail of gravel in the roads?
Do you still see people of building sites with no safety equipment?
Do you still see building sites with no information stuck on the front with all the relevant details that have to be there for all to see?
Do you still see sites which have not been boarded off with the famous 7 courses?

I'm fed up of all these construction companies closing the roads and making them their own. We have had a crane in our street for over 2 years now. Yes, OVER 2 YEARS. And we're surrounded by at least 20 cranes in around a 4 km radius. We are sick of the noise, pollution and damage to the roads that they cause. And they think they own the roads.(Gzira)
