Architects and officials from the Rehabilitation Unit of the Works Department are continuing to examine late medieval remains of fortifications found during excavations at Mdina near D’Homedes bastion. The fortifications are thought to be the earliest examples of defence against artillery. The excavations formed part of preliminary work to reinforce the bastion, which was mostly built on clay. Dr Stephen Spiteri, Superintendent of Fortifications, this morning showed members of the press the area where the discoveries were made (see video).
