I am shocked at the state of the roads, especially since last year my business suffered a drop of over €35,000 in summer due to the mismanagement of road works that started in 2006 and have still not been concluded.

The road concerned is Birżebbuġa Road, leading from the church past the roundabout at St George's Bay and past Alfresco restaurant leading to Għar Dalam. This main artery is still in need of the last stages of surfacing. One wonders why we pay a road licence, one of the highest in Europe, and why we submit our vehicles to VRT when many vehicles that are not roadworthy are still around, and why the governing bodies that are concerned with these matters just seem to bury their heads in the sand.

We should be concerned that the money paid in road licence fees is not being used for the upkeep of the roads but is diverted into other governmental schemes.

Hence, no one authority is able to keep track of contracts being fulfilled and whether there is proper maintenance.
