Stabbed man was father-in-law of US coach

The man stabbed to death at a Beijing tourist spot today was Todd Bachman, father-in-law of the US men's volleyball team coach, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) said in a statement.

Mr Bachman's wife, Barbara, was also seriously wounded in the knife attack and her injuries are life-threatening, the USOC said.

Their daughter, Elisabeth Bachman McCutcheon, who played volleyball for the US women's team at the 2004 Athens Games is married to Hugh McCutcheon, coach of the men's team. She was with her parents at the time of the attack but was not hurt, the USOC said.

"It is impossible to describe the depth of our sadness and shock in this tragic hour," US Olympic Committee chairman Peter Ueberroth said in the statement.

The Bachmans were not wearing apparel that identified them as relatives of members of the US team, the USOC added.
