Trackless train to run between Mdina, Rabat and Mtarfa
A trackless train transporting passengers to Mdina, Rabat and Mtarfa, with a running commentary along the route, was launched yesterday.
It is an initiative of the recently formed private partnership, Melita Trains, which was set up to provide a service for tourists and locals.
The trackless machine travels along an established route and through existing roadways. As of today it will run between 9.30 a.m. and 9.30 p.m.
The train is equipped with a multi-language commentary and GPS tracking and has three carriages accommodating up to 60 passengers.
It is fully compliant with safety and environmental standards, and has been made accessible for all persons, the company said.
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, who inaugurated this new initiative, acknowledged the valuable contribution of the private sector to the tourism industry.
The first Maltese train system which used to run between Valletta and Rabat ceased operations in 1931.

While this initiative is very attractive to tourists, I do not like being woken up by the train at 22:45 after having just fallen asleep. As the train passes through a residential area, it should take into consideration those residents who have to wake up early to go to work. If the last train ride starts at 21:30 and takes so long by the time it gets to Mtarfa then perhaps the last train ride should be 20:30 instead of 21:30. Please keep in mind that tourists are here on holiday and it doesn't matter what time they sleep but we are here all year round and need to work to support our families.

Alfred Aguis that is a good idea.(Hot Air Balloons) We won't have to produce the hot air, because we have enough hot air coming out of both political parties on the illegals.Yes, putting serious issues aside. Hot air balloons would make a great tourist attraction. Please only the ones made in ITALY for safety, and I'm serous about that. I don't want someone from Gzira trying to sew one.

May I suggest another novelty means of transport and of seeing the Island. For those who have a head for heights and want to get a spectacular view of our Island - HOT AIR BALLOONS. Not just for the spectacular trip but also for another way of travelling say from Sliema to Mellieha and Marsaxlokk with stops and perhaps locality tours coinciding with those of the Melita Trains. Let`s introduce creativity in our tourism package.

british tourism has declined since malta joined the EU, and from reading this website on a regular basis, what a bad decision that was

I experienced such a train ride restricted to the environs of Corfu Towm. It was more of a toy-train ride and seemed a novelty for a short tour rather than suitable for a longer journey.
A novelty alternative but in my opinion should be restricted to Valletta/Sliema, St.Paul`s Bay area and other similar routes and avoid steep gradients such as those between Rabat/Mdina and Mtarfa.
Good Luck
By the way, any novelty rides for the South ?,.

Well done Malta for taking another initiative in the tourist market. I note that British tourist numbers have decreased. Sadly, Malta rarely if ever makes the holiday pages of UK newspapers.

This is beautiful and it has GPS tracking, should it get lost in the mountains or get caught in a bad snow storm in Malta. There is no reason why the AFM shouldn't find it within a week or so. I'm only kidding Brgd Vassallo. Don't be dropping any bombs on my beloved Gzira.

Your comments re the train's timetable dont seem to be in the right direction, as from what I can understand the train's main idea is for tourism purposes - note that it has an ongoing commentary, which is for tourists..........
I think the Maltese population is so eager for some kind of REAL public transport that the mere idea of a train creates excitement...............
Hope private enterprise is gearing up for our eventual public transport revolution.............
We really need this to happen as soon as possible!!

Why till 9.30? This could easily be used to alleviate the traffic problem at particular popular hours in the Rabat-Mdina area where apart from the traffic jams, parking spaces are scarce. I suggest that this service should run till the late hrs - on second thoughts the area at night is in itself a tourist attraction.

Why only from 9.30am? What about the local commuters?

Franco Farrugia, go for it, it can't be that expensive. It's probably more that a bus ride and cheaper than a cab. Post what a smooth ride it is. With an Italian name it has to be smooth ride.
