The Labour Party’s is calling on the auditor general to investigate whether financial procedures were followed in the award of direct orders for security services at Mater Dei Hospital.

In a letter signed by Opposition leader and Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Charles Mangion and MPs Helena Dalli and Chris Agius, the MPs say that if procedures were not followed, the auditor should see whether the direct orders were justified for the sake of efficiency, value for money or any other principle.

They asked him to investigate if existing employees were being utilised and if the approved outsourcing was conflicting with their work, resulting in their under utilisation. This, they said, implied a waste of public funds.

The MPs asked for the auditor general’s recommendations to ensure that public funds were used efficiently and in the interest of tax payers and Mater Dei employees.

They asked the auditor to carry out his investigation in the shortest time possible in view of its urgency and for his report, which would be tabled in Parliament, to be debated in the PAC.
