Russian bombing killed about 30 Georgians but Georgia's forces now control the rebel South Ossetian capital and the surrounding area, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said in a live television address today.

"Unfortunately as a result of the bombardment about 30 people, mainly military men, are dead," President Saakashvili said in the five minute statement.

"Tskhinvali and the heights around Tskhinvali and the majority of the villages in South Ossetia are under the control of Georgian forces," he said.
