Beijing Olympics - Athletics

Discus thrower seeks redemption

Discus thrower Robert Fazekas is not coming to the Beijing Olympics for a medal, he is bidding for redemption.

The Hungarian, who won in Athens four years ago but was disqualified for a doping violation, said he wants to clear his name.

"I'll be just an extra in Beijing, I know that. There are 12 guys over 66 metres so even making the final would be quite something," Fazekas told Reuters.

"But I owe this to friends and family who stood by me all along."

Fazekas fought an uphill battle just to make it to Beijing. He qualified on the last possible day, financed all of his preparation from his own pocket and fought off critics who said he should be barred from the Olympics.
