With its new Dynamics AX 2009 (formerly known as Axapta) enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution, Microsoft intends to provide a solution for improved productivity to medium- and large-size companies, especially in manufacturing, e-business, wholesale and services industries.

Microsoft says its Dynamics AX is an adaptable business-management solution that enables business decision-makers to move with confidence. It works like other familiar software like Office applications, Outlook and SQL Server, thus making it easier for users to learn and run effectively. Speaking about about Dynamics AX 2009 and its offerings Mogens Elsberg, general manager ERP Microsoft Dynamics, said: "There are a number of key features that will make a big difference to customers. Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 provides improved user productivity through its new RoleTailored design, a familiar user interface, its self-service business intelligence and reporting tools, and new features to help manage the complexities of a global organisation."

Indeed, the need to bring everything together seems to be a top requirement in the globalised economy.

"In my opinion, the perception of ERP has changed fundamentally over the past five years," he explained. "Organisations are now looking for a state-of-the-art ERP solution to bring together their disparate businesses processes and increase the productivity of their employees. In short, ERP now lies at the heart of every forward-thinking enterprise.

"End users have also become a far more important consideration for organisations when evaluating their ERP strategies. In the past, the optimisation of business processes was the chief priority: The end user experience was a secondary concern. But at Microsoft, our focus has been to boost productivity and return on investment by placing the individual user at the centre of our development efforts. Our range of Microsoft Dynamics ERP products has been developed in the knowledge that if the users won't accept a solution imposed by the company, the implementation simply won't succeed. We believe that this is the key trend shaping our ERP applications today and tomorrow."

Typically, Microsoft Dynamics AX customers are looking for an ERP solution to help them accommodate a growing number of sites around the world. They are looking to streamline processes, reduce operational costs, manage compliance, and drive informed decision-making across their growing organisation. This includes cost-cutting and energy saving as the price of fuel and utility bills continue to soar.

"One area in which we are seeking to provide customers of AX2009 with tools to effectively manage their energy costs is through the Microsoft Dynamics Environmental Sustainability Dashboard," revealed Mr Elsberg. "This will help to enable small- to medium-sized businesses, the kind that may not have the luxury of hiring an environmental consultant, to begin the process of understanding where they are in terms of their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions."

Since 2006, Maltese IT services company Crimsonwing has been a Microsoft certified business partner specialising in the Dynamics suite of products. Crimsonwing is also one of a small group of accredited Dynamics-AX mobile developers and is the first Dynamics-AX partner in the UK to achieve certification in this area as well as having sold this solution to a client in Wales. Thus, it believes it is well placed to deliver the productivity and competitiveness gain that properly integrated systems can bring.

Crimsonwing has a large and experienced pool of Dynamics resources which now totals over 50 people. According to James Bonello, Crimsonwing's managing director, the company is "ramping up its Dynamics resource to gear up for the influx of new work that AX2009 is expected to bring. We have sold two Dynamics AX2009 upgrade solutions and are looking forward to the new projects these clients will bring."

"As a powerful tool, the benefits of AX2009 will be hugely tangible. We have seen clients look to streamline their operations and improve the way in which different departments relate with one another by implementing an ERP solution. These enhancements give clients the ability to collaborate successfully with customers, partners, employees and suppliers as they pursue new strategies and expand their capabilities".
