Briton pleads guilty to cannabis possession
A 38-year-old British national was conditionally discharged for one year after pleading guilty to being in possession of cannabis resin.
Magistrate Antonio Vella heard how Marcel Salvatore Melito was found with a minimal amount of cannabis resin on the night of August 2. Before handing down judgement the magistrate took into consideration Mr Melito's early admission and that the amount found was negligible. Police Inspector Dennis Theuma prosecuted.

Cannabis is god sent herb to help mankind.
It has been used for over five thousand years to effectively treat many ailments like MS or the pain and inflammation from arthritis, PMS etc with very little side effects.
It was sold in tinctures made by respected pharma companies till 1941.

It is "High Time" excuse the pun ;) that a distinction is made between the various classes of drugs. Cannabis does not lead to heroin, cocaine etc or can it be compared to them. I believe that the majority, mostly older citizens are not aware of this distinction and hence consider all drugs as addictive and lethal...a distant reality.

D.Bones - You say "The problem will get worse" What problem? Have you heard of people commiting crimes under the influence of cannabis? The most that an indivuadual can get up to after cannabis comsumption is raiding his/her own fridge after an attack of munchies! Don't confuse cannabis with higher classed drugs. I can't help but laugh at the authorities for wasting time and money just to prosecute this guy. I'm sure we all feel so much safer now that this Drug Lord has been dealt with! Hurray!

and by taking the problem seriously you think that Prosecuting a 38 yr old man (hardly a teenager who is experimenting!) and splashing his name all over the papers, while using up many resources and court time?
By the same reasoning then we should seriously consider stopping the next bingo night at the parish next weekend for fear of people becoming addicted to gambing!
What a waste of time and money while young people have absolutely no problem in purchasing heroin, exctasy and cocaine!

I can understand these comments but an old proverb says :-
From small acorns do large oak trees grow !
In other words the problem , as seen in other countries , will get worse if not taken seriously .

Is it possible that we needed to prosecute someone for possession of a 'negligable' amount of cannabis when there are so many more pressing problems with othere crimes?
This sentence really shows that society is loosing the war on drugs. What benefit has come out of such a sentence?

Ridiculous !! - Having your name splashed across the papers for having a negligible amount of cannabis which being such a small amount was undoubtedly for personal use. Hardly a drug baron. Get real and print what is actually newsworthy.
