Richard Fenech's letter entitled Light At The End Of The Tigne' Point Tunnel (July 7) needs some clarifications.

The author may be interested to learn that the actual construction works to the tunnel itself took just over two years and not six as he implied. We would like to take this opportunity to invite Mr Fenech to come in for a detailed presentation as to why these works had to be spread over a five and-a-half-year period in order to preserve the Garden Battery that lay in its trajectory.

All I will add in the meantime is that had the channel tunnel developers been faced with the same proportional stoppages from their respective authorities as we have had on this 250-metre tunnel it would probably still be under construction.
