Updated: Karl Chircop 'in deep coma'
(Adds MLP statement)
Labour MP Karl Chircop is in ‘deep coma’ at Mater Dei Hospital having suffered cerebral haemorrhage (stroke), the Health Division said this morning.
Dr Chircop was rushed to hospital on Sunday night.
The Health Division said the Chircop family has expressed its gratitude for the strong sense of solidarity shown to it by all sectors of Maltese society.
The family also thanked hospital staff and called for its privacy to be respected. Relatives and friends have therefore been asked not to phone and not to call at the hospital.
The Labour Party in a statement this morning described Dr Chircop's condition as precarious and said the MP had been visited in hospital once more by Joseph Muscat.
It said more medical tests were being carried out.
The Labour Party, on behalf of the Chircop family, thanked the people for their support. The family is being supported by Vincent Moran and Michael Farrugia, both former health ministers, and surgeon Anthony Zammit.

Karl Happy Birthday. My present to you is praying to St Rita and St Gaetan - today his feast - to intercede before the Almighty for your recovery; and your return in the midst of your family and friends.

I've known Karl since childhood in Paola and eventually we worked together in hospital.
Dear God, Father of all humanity, only You know what's best for Your children. Yet nothing is impossible in your powers. We pray that You give this real gentleman a second chance to live so he will be with us again with his typical big smile. As for his family, we are all with you at this sad time. Have courage.

I have known Karl since sixth form.
A high flyer, family man, professional in his work. It has never been difficult to be frank when speaking to him. Although coming from tdifferent partiies but in the same constituency, there was never a moment when respect, dignity or cordiality was lacking.
I have canvassers who make use of his services as a doctor, who infact phoned me in shock with the news of his condition.
My wife and myself wish to express our solidarity with Adriana, Karl's mother and their children.

May God be Karl's and his family's Good Shepherd in this critical moment of his human existence. Karl's ability to draw together people from different walks of life to lump praise on him when he cannot even appreciate it due to his medical condition is yet another of his 'silent' achievements. May Saint George Preca be with him and his beloved ones!

I was shocked with the news I've known Karl for 15 years now it all started as a family Doctor but as years turned by he became more of a friend than the family doctor. He love his work both as MD and MP apart that he adored his Family,Dr.Vincent Moran and Liverpool not to say the least. Hoping for a miracle as tommorow is your 43rd birthday. May the Devine be with you my dear friend. Hope to see you again soon.

He loved his dear ones but not least his patients.
As an ex colleague in Parliament I always admired his well prepared speeches in a very moderate and constructive manner.
He now requires our prayers for a speedy recovery.
Pray and it shall be given. Knock and it shall be open. Strength in faith especially in the hour of need.

It would be a great pity if the Labour Party had to lose Dr Karl Chircop. It would be a great pity if his constituents and clients were to lose him too. But his family would suffer an irrepareable loss - who could ever replace him? One's thoughts and prayers go out to Karl and his family. In the valley of the shadow of death I need not fear evil.
