'I will be everyone’s general secretary' - Jason Micallef

Jason Micallef has promised to let bygones by bygones.

“As of now, I will look ahead. What happened in the past will remain in the past. I will forget all that was said about me during the campaign,” the newly re-elected MLP general secretary told timesofmalta.com.

He said he was very satisfied with the result. "With their strong vote the delegates have showed that they believe in me, and they feel that I still have a lot to offer as general secretary”.

Mr Micallef obtained 370 of the 837 valid votes cast yesterday, putting him comfortably ahead of the other three candidates.

He said that he met all 889 delegates during the campaign, some of them twice, and discussed with them the criticism he had been getting.

“I replied to the criticism internally - that is how things should be done.”

Asked about his relations with people in the party such as former deputy leader Michael Falzon, who had openly criticised him, Mr Micallef said: “I am everyone’s general secretary, including Michael Falzon’s... I am also Leo Brincat’s general secretary and whoever’s... What’s past is past, whatever was said about me is forgotten.”

He said the party now needed to look ahead and settle down to its party business because the people wanted a strong opposition and that was what interested the delegates. "The delegates want a party focused on policies, on the national interest, on finding ways to defend the workers."

On his role in the next five years, Mr Micallef said that it would be different than in the past five. He was now working with a new leadership and he looked forward to the first meeting of the administration to decide on how to proceed. He described his relations with the new administration as excellent.

Jason SAYS he will forget all that was said about him during the campaign, but im ABSOLUTELY sure that deep in his heart OF COURSE HE WILL NOT - NO DOUBT. ovvjament it-tond ma jmutx kwardu.

i wish to congratulate the congregation of dope delegates who voted for Jason, for being so "BLUE" and voting for him, thus in turn assuring another victory for the PN. I usually believed in the PN but truly I think that there needs to be a change in government cause PN is rusting inside as well. MLP could have been a good alternative for the next election for the people, but ONLY COULD HAVE BEEN. With Jason still there, I dont believe there is an alternative for the people, and PN will be victorious again.

Im just sorry for Dr Muscat himself, who might loose the next election, his first one as leader, and gives a bad image of himself, because of his GS who shall continue to contaminate the MPL. I believe that Muscat should challenge him, if he wants to protect HIS OWN reputation, ghax finalment fuqu tirrifletti.
alan Falzon (on 9/8/08)
.. well we all know who his 'everyone' is !!!! .... maybe he is forgetting that too!!
Ethelbert Schembri (on 7/8/08)
Hey Mr J Vella you are also on this blog ? how interested are you in Jason Micallef ?
You are welcome in the MLP family if you are so interested !!

How come most of the bloggers know so much on Jason Micallef . It seems that lot of people around here know a lot on the MLP too .
If NO, can you please comment on the weather it is better .
Because as DOM MINTOFF once said if we say that “ in the sky there is the sun” , you come and say “that is a cloud”
George Douglas (on 7/8/08)
At least jason micallef was elected democraticily 370 votes out of 837 .The pn general secretary was elected out of 70 something votes....
martin portelli (on 7/8/08)
Dr. Muscat’s new vision should have made sure that no prima donnas were included in the first place. It a bit too late to issue warnings to the rest of the cast, now the curtain's gone up. The production is looking tackier by the minute and prima donna already flying discordantly solo on smash TV. Who's curbing what exactly? Who's reigning in who? Who's humbly rehabilitated? Who's screeching at the top of his voice?
Don't count on a full house, the director is suffering from stage fatigue already.
J Vella (on 7/8/08)

He talks exactly as if he has been elected party leader, not secretary general.

He's so arrogant!

Labour is truly in a mess: this guy has got Joseph Muscat elected, and now himself and the others in his clique.

Who can stop him? (Joseph surely didn't!)

To think that in 5 years' time this guy could be the secretary general of the party in government!
Mark Bugeja (on 7/8/08)
Dr Joe Muscat will bring a new idea of thinking and a new vision in the Labour Party. A good leader like Dr Muscat will not let Jason dictate what is being done in the party like I think it happened in the past. As Dr Muscat said there would be no place for "prima donnas" in the party
MLP needed a change in the leader and now it is time to roll up their sleeves and get ready to work hard. Malta needs a good opposition party and now that MLP have a good leader I am very happy that I am Maltese. MLP must defend all workers and work hard for good conditions of all workers in Malta. Dr Muscat have to work more hard now that Jason Micallef is confirmed so that he reunites back the party and injects the new mentality needed to move forward.
Bernard Mamo (on 7/8/08)
Dear Jason,
Please don't forget anything that was said about you in the past, but remember not to do anything like that again! Keep it in your mind! There are lots of people who don't want you so don't be all smiling about.

j chetcuti (on 7/8/08)
"I will be............!" Oh!!!!! He will be. Why is he promising to be everyone's general secretary?????????? Was he not in the past??????

Only ONE thing is expected from you dear jm.....RESIGN.....TODAY.
PJ Mifsud (on 7/8/08)

" I will be everyone's General Secretary " - Jason Micallef.

Judging from past experience, you should address those words to the MARINES, and not to MLP supporters.
Michael Tabone (on 7/8/08)
Joseph Farrugia: I don't think you keep up-to-date with the local news in Malta. Any idea how much damage Jason Micallef (JM) has managed to do on his own to the MLP. Everyone, even PN supporters thought MLP were going to vote for a new general secretary. The fact remains nearly 500 delegates voted against (well for other candidates) JM. So how does it ring in your bell that only PN supporters are against JM when actually the majority of Labour didn't want him back in his position. This has turned out to be a disaster for Labour.

Labours only hope, as was said by labour supporters is for the delegates who didn't vote for JM to declare a vote of no confidence against him. So how is it, only PN supporters are here, when there are floaters and MLP supporters as well.

Oh I forgot, since MLP has JM as their GS again, all labour supporters should be happy? So what the MLP supporters who didn't want JM back just disappeared?

Have you read the comments by MLP supporters....all they are saying "oh crap...sorry Joseph, you showed us hope for a short while". What typical ignorance.
Mr Mario Schembri (on 6/8/08)
Even though I don't agree with Mr Micallef's re-appointment as general
secretary of the MLP, I still respect the intelligence of the delegates. As
I am reading the comments of so many individuals who had something to
say about Mr Micallef's reappointment, one particular question I want
to ask is "How did you (Jason) manage to get so many people against you,
people not only from the opposing party but also people who know you
well enough within the party? If I were in your shoes, no exuberant
salary would keep me in the post when I know that I am criticised openly by
so many people. If arrogance is your problem, then, start working on it. Start thinking twice before you speak and where you do not know enough,
ask. You need to learn how to become a better individual. Follow the example of your leader - those who contested with you for the post of a general secretary, try to involve
them. You know they are by far better qualified academically.I don't mean to hurt your feelings but if you need to be humbled, then so be it.
Joseph Farrugia (on 6/8/08)

most of all these comments are coming from pn supporters, they were searching for a change of the MLP GS. I suggest you to stop wasting your time worrying about the GS of the MLP, is better to worry about your party.

WHO IS THE REAL PRIM MINISTER, Dr. Austin Gatt, John Dalli or JPO?
If Mr Micallef was elected with a small number of votes(370) with how many votes was elected Dr. Borg Olivier?
was it deal or no deal between Dalli and Saliba regarding Saliba's resignation from GS?
I am sure that you are worried because you are seeing that there is going to be a stronger team, the GS is not the MLP, he is part of the team, and I am convinced that Jason Micallef is going to be much better.
let bygones be bygones, this is a new team, these same writers before the last general election probably were saying that with Dr. Sant MLP will never win the general Election, now the tune has changed, with Jason we are going to stay in the opposition. They are forgetting that the leader is Dr. Joseph Muscat now.
Joseph A Borg (on 6/8/08)
on Xarabank after the election, we had the opportunity to see the generals who fought the election (Joe Saliba & Jason Micallef) discuss their strategy. I cannot understand how Jason could be elected as general preparing for the next election! He showed a total lack of understanding about electioneering. He came across as a bumbling general who thought that by virtue of having lost the previous 4 wars, luck should be on his side this time round! By contrast Joe Saliba had all the important details on his finger tips and could explain them easily, distilling a complex strategy into it's salient points. Thank god the mumbling team didn't win the election.
On the other hand I'm desperate for a winning opposition, otherwise the balance of democracy is failing. We are effectively becoming a plutocracy. Come on labour! you owe it to this country! Build a team of good technocrats that guide your policy for the good of all the Maltese. We'll be watching for a strong re-birth, notwithstanding the blows thrown at Muscat by the delegates.
Shaun A. Camilleri (on 6/8/08)
Of course he has to say he will forget what was said about him, does he have any other choice! He ofended people with his arrogance a trait that he cannot brush off. What was said about him was true though. He is arrogant and I cannot stand his mocking smile and his arrogance. You get what you deserve I suppose.

On the other hand I do not care for The Malta Labour Party or any party for that matter they are all the same Bla Bla Bla If you cannot sleep just listen to a politician at night waffling and you are instantly in dream land.

New labour! Ha!
C. Abdilla (on 6/8/08)
@.. MALTA LABOUR PARTY

Jason should stop being SO Rude and Arrogant as above... HE IS INSULTING OUR INTELLIGENCE........

As far as i am concerned, i will give no DONATIONS in any future Labour collections, SO LONG AS THERE IS THIS `MINORITY` MAN, as General Secretary.

I DO NOT WANT TO BE INVOLVED IN THE SUBSIDIZING OF HIS ALREADY FAT SALARY..........

SORRY JOSEPH..
Lara Borg (on 5/8/08)
Well Done Jason - I am sure that you will do a splendid job... as for the rest of the nationalist we could have elected JC you still would not vote for labour so really your comments are just useless.. If we had to stay saying that Jason did not get the majority therefore the majority do not want him - we can also say that for our government becuase the PN sorry GONZIPN did not get the majority of the votes but unfortounately they are still up there even though the majority did not vote for them or do we only bring up this scenario when it suites us :)... GOod luck to both JM....
Joseph Attard (on 5/8/08)
What a let down, Jason Micallef,!.......no comment at all and as for the delegates who voted you in...thanks,......youve just voted in the PN government till 2018. And for those of you who might think Im blue youre wrong, Im more labour then any Dr Joseph Muscat or any Jason Micallef.....but this was the icing on the cake. I vouch never ever ever to vote Labour ever again. When we lost the election , it was lost by a team and the whole team should have left the ring...although id compliment Dr Micheal Falzon for showing the edge over anyone else by staying there till the end. But the whole bunch had to be gutted and I do hope that in the years to come your party general conference(i wont be a part of this party ever more) will decide that any election failure means those responsible should be accountable.....and please dont ask who these 370 delegates are......those who play cards at the Kazin and are chosen on the spur of the moment, cause he canvasses for X or Y, what a disgusting way to become a delegate and ruin the future democracy of your country.....ad multos annos
Joe Galea (on 5/8/08)
You should apologise to everyone and not vice versa. You repelled so many people from the party with your sheer arrogance and manipulations. You have turned a lot of labourites into PN supporters. Now you want to forget. If it comes to that, we have to forget the irreparable damage you have done. Shame on you.!!!

You are no one's gen. sec. you are just a balloon full of H2S.
Joe Galea (on 5/8/08)
Do you believe that people are so gullible? You are what you are, a serial loser and you won't let bygones by bygones

Resign now as no one wants you apart from those dumb Ostriches who voted you again. You are the dismantler of the party. We were building some hope with the new leadership, but with your re-election all the dreams have gone up in fumes once again.

You are a let down!! Your arrogance is unmeasureable!! Joseph Muscat should have had the guts to kick your ass out. Or at least they should have given you a job as the plant caretaker of the headquarters.
Kevin Spiteri (on 5/8/08)
Well said Mark Bugeja! We must be united and work together for the best of the country!
karen grech (on 5/8/08)
im sorry but I dont believe you Jason. You were already general secretary when we lost the last election, but during Xarabank you said that labourites are not suffering for the defeat (m'ghandomx dulur). If you didnt share the same grief with us in March, how w ill you now be everyone's general secretary? You know many labourites dont want you, and you didnt get the majority of votes from delegates, but maybe you were afraid to remain unemployed so you contested again. I will personally send you my vote at the mlp hq next general election. I wont vote cause you are still there, and this cant be our new labour. I am sorry for Joseph cause he has people like you around him who wont help him change the party.
alfred agius (on 5/8/08)
To all the diehard pn supporters who have commented on this article. I cannot understand how much concerned for the MLP you all feel.. . Why don`t you join your party`s secretary general in congratulating the newly elected MLP party officials and pray for the present two party system to work in the most democratic way befitting the maltese nation that is in the interest of one and all. Pity that to many people prefer to resort to taunting rather than contributing to a new political climate.
Shame on you all.
alfred agius (on 5/8/08)
Robert Vagner, keep on voting for the pn that harbours people like JPO, Not. Abela, Ninu Zammit, etc. and so many honourable gentlmen. Keep on voting for the party that won the last election, not a majority, by sheer macchiavellism as admitted by Joe Saliba, the PN former secretary general. You don`t seem so much of a floater. Can you tell us what irkes you in the PN. Oh no, you wouldn`t do that...
Michael Catania (on 5/8/08)
The conservatives don't know when to let off. I think its time you grew up and start behaving like grown up. Most of you I presume are church going Catholics, so start behaving like you mean it. The hate that comes out of your mouth (oops I mean KEYBOARD) towards Jason Micalleef is shameful.Do you want him to be like your ex secretary , one who engages in facist tactics by disrupting Alferd Sant's news conference at the pbs , but hold on your past leaders your past leaders and party were financially supported by the italian facists. If anyone is to change I think its you and your party, I could go on but I will leave it at that for now FINALLY CONGRATULATION JASON ON BEING RE ELECTED SECRETARY GENERAL ON THE MLP
Lynn Zahra (on 5/8/08)
Jason MIcallef expressed negative but totally spontaneous thoughts about George Abela on Xarabank . I'm sure that the very same thought crossed many other people's mind , so really, when you think about it, Jason's mistake was voiceing his negative thought out loud, in front of hundreds of viewers. So what? To me that's honesty which I respect - he blurted it out - because with Jason what you see is what you get - there's no hypocrisy, no back stabbing. Labourites understand such behaviour and indeed many support it.

I'm sure that Jason has learned his lesson from the unhappy event and his past experience in the last election , will contribute towards making him an excellent GS, just what Joseph needs to propell him to victory in 2013. Go for it man!

c gatt (on 5/8/08)
@Mark Bugeja
Perhaps Mr Bugeja can explain how the surcharge is the government's fault? Helllloooooo! Are you living in cloud cuckoo land?

Re the Public transport system. So you like the idea of being held hostage by a monopoly. As to the dry docks, this was a well known fact before the elections. In fact i seem to remember Super one TV having interviews with the Polish socialist MEPs who were (surprise, surprise) trying to stop similar things happening in Poland.
If you are comfortable seeing the country spending hard earned resources keeping a white elephant afloat, rather you then me chum!
JOHN SCERRI (on 5/8/08)
One must learn to make a distinction between the person and politics.
Certain comments made by MLP high rank officials with respect to Jason Micallef backfired in the same way as they backfired when the MLP election campaign was partly based on character assassination. Hence the result.
NOW..........Let's hope that all politicians from both sides learn once and for all that attacking the person not the argument will only strengthen the person being attacked.
I am sure verbal mistakes made in the heat of the election will inspire a more mature attitude from the MLP GS.
One learns through one's mistakes but one does not need to do all the mistakes himself.

It will also be wise to stop and pray for Dr. Karl Kirkop in order for him to get well and unite with his family to be together again.
mark tanti (on 5/8/08)
I still cannot believe that JM was re-elected. No Jason you can never be everyone's GS your smile betrays you. Sorry but I cannot stay longer on my PC because I would have not stopped with such a short comment.
A Abela (on 5/8/08)
So the trick works like this....

PN Media side with the contender which in their strategy mind think is the most potential adversary. Now the labour delegates (il hmir ta bendu) thinks that by electing the other contender would mean the PN Media is defeated.

Perfect examlple : PN media wanted Dr Muscat as a leader so they sided with Dr Abela. They wanted Jason Micallef so they sided with Mr Grixti.Very logical and works perfect with these Delegates.....Incredible but true.....

Everybody knows that with the tandem Dr Muscat and Mr Smiley there life is much more easier.......

Keep up the good work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chris Cini (on 5/8/08)
@ Mark Bugeja

You are absolutely right ... all the workers you have mentioned, surcharge and a gamut of other things which continue to hurt BUT you know what??? These deficiencies within the Nationalist administration were there BEFORE 8 March 2008 ... and the Maltese electorate had all the chance in the world to remove PN from office ... but this never happened ... do you have a faint idea as to why?? You have given the answer in your very last comment .. yes its Sant's and Micallef's fault ... becuase we feel we would fare better with an administration that continues to tax us as against an administration which doesn't have the slighest clue as to where it's going. Would anybody feel comfortable with an administration that wasnt even capabale of publishing an electorla manifesto? And incidentally...whose responisibility was this publication. Was it Mr Micallef's?
K Borg (on 5/8/08)
Sorry Jason - you are as convincing as you were on election night.........what a loser!
Edwin Mifsud (on 5/8/08)
So the "Referendum Konsultative" rule did not apply to Mr. Micallef.
Only 44.21% voted for Mr. Micallef which with Ex Leaders reasoning means that he does not enjoy the faith of the majority of the Party Delegates.
N.B. The other 55.79% does not even include those who abstained from voting or the dead.
Pawlu Agius (on 5/8/08)
Hope the arrogance of the PN and this complete circus of MLP will end the 2 party system and lead to other alternative parties to choose from and which a democratic Malta deserves.
P Muscat (on 5/8/08)
Blajta s-sunnara Mr. Joe Sammut!! So did the MLP Delegates!! We (tal-PN) told you not to elect Jason as GS so that you tell the MLP Delegates not to obey us or The Times and do the opposite. The clever MLP Delegates obeyed you. This way we can rest assured that the next election is blue. Will be another good cause to celebrate. Cheers in advance. This must have been Joe Saliba's last gimmick. Thanks and well done Joe!
joseph farrugia (on 5/8/08)
As a nationalist i would like to thank the370 MLP delegates by using Joseph Muscat words
INHOBBKOM HAFNA
Charles, J.Schembri (on 5/8/08)
Well...there is only one answer...that is I forone will not vote Labour come next election.................thank you for not doing the right thing................
David Spiteri (on 5/8/08)
It's true . JM is arrogant and has no administrative skills. I would be happier if someone else should have won the contest yesterday, BUT, I cannot understand how these so called 'floating voters' keep on saying that because of him, they will never vote MLP!! Did you all forget 5 years ago what have happened in the PN camp when they lost the European parliament election and all the other Local councils elections? Everyone bombarded Saliba to resign but he did not. But what happened? After all those losses PN won the last general election with a slim margin and everyone in the PN camp then turned into making Saliba a hero!! So please, forget about the general secretary and follow Joseph. One last thing. These so called floating voters here, are they ready to vote for a party which have an MP, coming from a saga of conflicts of interest on a plot of land in odz, and being projected for a disco, and this week is representing us Maltese citizens in the Commonwealth Conference on "Dealing with Conflicts of Interest and Corruption in Small States"?? If yes then you are not floating voters. You are PATHETIC!!!
Ivan Galea (on 5/8/08)
Whilst not being a fan at all of Daphne, this time around I humbly have to agree to her previous comments on Labour Delegates...oh yes oh yes a faithful breed of 'Headless Chickens'.....!!
In the end these are the same people who voted time and time again for Sant to be their leader nothwithstanding defeat after defeat , and if as they say history repeats itself, MLP is doomed to adorn the oppostion benches for a very long time....
Being a person with Labour leanings, this is a very sad day indeed, and the only thing I can do is cry.....
Anthony Grech (on 5/8/08)
ONE MINUIT WE THE PEOPLE OF THIS BLESSED ISLANDS ARE FULL OF MERCY AND SYMPATHY, NEXT MINUIT WE ARE FULL OF HATERED AND DISRISPECT.... WHY? EVEN ON THIS ANNUS PAULINUS?
vincent magro (on 5/8/08)
dear jason,it is good that you will be every one's general segretary but you still have to answer what was written on you and and answer all the accusations, deny them or give some explanation to show that you are really the good man for the gob.
apgrech (on 5/8/08)
Jason, the MLP does not consist solely of the delegates but of the general public who will eventually vote during the next election.

Why on earth did you run for office when you know the majority of the public does not want you? Are you brave, stubborn or obstinate or did you sweet talk to the delegates so they can vote you in?

You sure have guts!!!
Joseph Agius (on 5/8/08)
Good luck MLP for more years in opposition!
Randolph Bugeja (on 5/8/08)
So now that the MLP's internal elections are over, and that some changes have been made, how many people here feel that the MLP is really a better party than it was before the last election?

Here are the significant changes:
Alfred Sant -> Joseph Muscat
Charles Mangion -> Anglu Farrugia
Michael Falzon -> Toni Abela
Joe Mifsud -> Alex Sciberras Trigona (this is significant since he is a CNI campaigner).

In my eyes this party has moved further from the political centre.. not really sure which way it has moved to but that's another story altogether.
joe borg (on 5/8/08)
Yes of course and I am the King of the World. How pathetic he can't even say anything else that someone else had already said
S Vella (on 5/8/08)
Like many others here, I am truly appalled by the outcome of this election. Although my sympathies have always been with the MLP, I have refrained from voting for it for 3 times in a row due to various reasons. Now, when I thought that the party was finally going through the necessary changes that would make it gain the credibility and respect it so much lacked... there come these few hundred "delegates", who keep ruining the party's and the country's fate time and time again, and they once again crush all our hopes by re-electing the same arrogant and incompetent G.S. The delegates have failed miserably in their judgement. We true labour sympathisers should come up with something to put pressure on the party's higher officials in order to make them realise that with such people around them, they will never get our support.
The MLP has become a victim of the sheer ineptness of its delegates.
Louis Grech Marsaxlokk (on 5/8/08)
Dear Jason Thanks for your interest!
No thanks!!!!
bye bye MLP
Antoine Zammit (on 5/8/08)
Thanks to the Labor delegates, we going to have another victory in the 2013 elections. What a difference between outdated Jason Micallef and freshly elected Paul Borg Olivier!

To all those who this morning woke up disappointed after hearing the results – come and join us in the Nationalist Party. There is room for everyone, we believe in dialogue not in Klikkek! We believe in sharing not in Fortizzi and we work for the interest of our country not for out self pride!

Hail to all those delegates – grazzi :-)
E.Grima (on 5/8/08)
Lot of you here clearly have nothing else to worry about. Give yourself a break and if you have nothing good to say after all this say nothing at all. You're sounding like a broken record!!! Good Luck, Mr. Micallef you have many people behind you not just the delegates that voted for you!
ALBERT FENECH (on 5/8/08)
I urge ALL MLP supporters and sympathisers to beware of the agent provacateurs who are trying to dominate these comments with disparaging and destructive remarks about yesterday's elections and the re-election of Jason Micallef to the post of General Secretary. The majority of delegates have spoken decisively, and that is that. Mr. Micallef may not be loved by all, but then who is? Exaggerated talk of "another defeat on the cards" is pure nonsense. With all its sores and warts, the PN was re-elected to Government last March, even though they had the JPO millstone around their necks (and they still have). Whatever Mr. Micallef has or has not done surely pales into invisible insignificance in this regards.

So, let's look forward together to the next General Election, put differences behind us and work as a team to restore decent governance to these islands.
Trevor Mallia (on 5/8/08)
I cannot understand how Mr. Micallef is considering 44% of the delegates as a strong vote. Does he not realise that the majority of his own party does not want him? Does he truly believe in democracy?
James De Giorgio (on 5/8/08)
Well maybe luckily George Abela and Michael Falzon and Labourites with their head on their shoulders will band together and form a new, real party that appeals, away from the likes of Micallef, for goodness' sake.
James De Giorgio (on 5/8/08)
Oh my God!!!! I give up on Labour... seriously.
Mark Bonello (on 5/8/08)
I ever I won an election of some sort and got so many disappointing comments about my victory......I would have immediatly invented some sort " personal reason" to step down!
But after all I am not Jason
D Fenech (on 5/8/08)
you will be everyone's secretary!!!! but nobody wants you except less than 50% of 899 votes!
As for floaters MLP can wave them goodbye!
Nobody feels sorry for MLP now because they BLEW their chances to the wind and did it all by themselves!!!
In the long run they did Malta an injustice because we are heading for a one party state and the fault lies with the BRAINS who devised this FROGA!
Unfortunately GOOD men made themselves available, to bring about some sort of change, but they were rejected and ignored!
You made your bed! Now lie in it!
Mark Bonello (on 5/8/08)
Wow! " What was said about me is forgotten"....."strong vote"....he also described his relations with the new administration as excellent( they supposedly haven't met yet)........This is JR language whoever remembers him....... but after all Malta needs a person that all just love to hate so dearly.
C. Ebejer (on 5/8/08)
It is not a question that he (Jason Micallef) will forget what was said about him, but rather whether the electorate is prepared to forget what he has said, all the scathing remarks he passed against respected people, such as Michael Falzon, Leo Brincat, George Abela, not to mention all Maltese citizens when prior to the election at the Dolmen Hotel, he said the a labour government would be for labourites.
The labour delegates are forgetting that they get to choose their leader and the administration, BUT the Maltese people (the outsiders-as we were called during the extraordinary general meeting, by a speaker) choose the prime minister and the government,!!
and these delegates, do they represent (in a realistic portion) the different sectors of maltese people, such as sex, level of education and profession?
After all the Maltese people are made up of different levels of education, professions and age and different sex. And everyone's vote counts!!
D. Camilleri (on 5/8/08)
Was'nt It Mr.Jason Micallef to send all Labour supporters in the streets on the day of the elections telling them that his Party had won and the count was not correct... Are the good old times coming back to haunt us?
I remember when Jason spoke about Dr.Alfred Sant on a T.V Program saying how Dr Sant called Jason Micallef when he was on holiday & wanted Jason to be by Dr.Sant's side the time he was operated on, he (JASON) said that Dr.Sant called him because he felt he was the closest person to him & Needed to speak with him,, Are they still best of pal's as we see another Dr.Sant in this party..
To all Labour Supporters thanks for another lost Election.
Well Done Jason.
Michael Mifsud (on 5/8/08)
You will surely never be my general secretary! I honestly had started to build hope that the MLP could become a realistic alternative to PN in government. That hope has vanished in a matter of hours. Mr. Micallef simply cannot understand that following the outcome of the last general election and his behaviour...the only way was OUT!! That would have been the greatest service he could have rendered, not only to the MLP but also to the country. Unfortunately selfishness overshadowed any kind of patriotic values. Mr. Micallef cannot and will not change any of his ways... Regretfully he has no clue what leadership is all about. I just keep on wondering how it is possible that MLP delegates time and again fail to see the writing on the wall. What a pity!

Today it is a very sad day to the Malta Labour Party because our Karl is battling for life. I am really
disappointed with all these destructive comments towards Jason and some of the comments that PN will be forever in government and making equations that are unbelievable. I am sure that Jason and Micheal Falzon will arrange their differences for the good of the party. I am sure that everyone knows who was wright before the 8th March election. Tell the Shipyard workers, the GO workers, the Public Transport workers. All of you who will be paying a 95 percent surcharge till New Tarrifs will be implemented with more Surcharge included in the Water and Electricity bill. Oh Its Jason's and Sant's fault.
P Borg (on 5/8/08)
Jason Micallef's win is the greatest defeat for all true Laburisti. Will the likes of George Abela and Michael Falzon remain on their feet after such another humiliation?!
Chris Cini (on 5/8/08)
What a let down! I just couldnt believe my eyes this morning when I saw the results. I am now convinced that there is a sizeable faction within the MLP who is comfortable in the opposition and wants to ensure that the situation remains that way. These people might think that they have voted JM into the GS post to get back at the PN media ... but in actual fact they have literally played into their hands.
Situation now is that for floaters, the situation has literally remained as it was prior to March 2008. Can anybody enlighten me as to what real changes have taken place within the MLP. Same faces...just little cosmetics. Real pity ... as long as people like the present GS remain in the top posts within the MLP, I will refrain from ever daring give my vote to this party ever again.
Sylvana Zarb Darmanin (on 5/8/08)
I just hope that the 370 delegates voting for Mr. Jason Micallef are prepared to shoulder the responsibility should the Labour Party suffer further Election Defeats! Furthermore, the Labour Party should study and consider the various negative comments appearing in the media as it definitely needs the people's votes and not just those of the delegates!

Furthermore, actions speak louder than words. To be honest, I do not quite like certain actions by Mr. Micallef towards other Labourites.

Is this the way the Party intends inviteing all Labour supporters back into its fold?
Keven Sammut (on 5/8/08)
Well done Jason! The PN will definately remain in government for another 10 years thanks to you being re-elected as secretary general!
James Genovese (on 5/8/08)
Dear Jason
you are always telling us how things should be done but it's very clear that you are a failure when it comes to your main objective that is taking the Labour party to win an election and that is what you get that fat salary for, imsomma Jason you are a Santist and that is the guarantee of a total failure like the past the present. The new leader will be a strong stallion for the next race but he already broke his leg and that handicap is you.

what a pity you remind me of Fenech Adami's photofinish phrase when i saw you on One news yellow faced claiming that the figures you have are different from Saliba's.

I want to give you a suggestion, please consider it seriously, stop that stupid smile and start working and begin with copying Saliba, he can teach you som tecqniques of how to win an election from a total failure.

GOOD LUCK Joseph
Charles Camilleri (on 5/8/08)
Inspite of calling on the delegates twice Jason you failed to convince the majority to vote for you. Are you then a secretary of the minority? Speaking in the same language that labourites speak about the Govt.
Maria Vella (on 5/8/08)
With self-appointed leaders like Jason, who needs enemies? It is only people like Leo that keep me hanging on. What a let-down.
anton cassar (on 5/8/08)
Dear Mr Micallef be prepared to receive the votes of my wife & mine for each and every election coming until you hold the post of Secretary General of whats left of the MLP.
Stephen Zammit (on 5/8/08)
I guess the pn media works.
d.attard (on 5/8/08)
It is good that while we bleed from government incompetence, the drivers who should have given us new hope yet managed to drive us head on against a brick wall, can come out of all this smiling, telling us how they will resume their fight...what a nightmare!
T Abela (on 5/8/08)
Dr Muscat can't do anything with Jason! In the first place, he shouldn't have endorsed him 'unofficially'! Yesterday evening result can be translated as follows - MLP delegates voted for PN... to remain in power till 2018!!!
Clayton Luke Mula (on 5/8/08)
The result is final, but that's not everything.

We wanted a new beginning in the Malta Labour Party. For me Jason Micallef is not part of the new beginning. He's a SKADUT.

What he has done in the last General Election Campaing was not a type of business what a General Secretary must do. Have we see Mr. Joe Saliba doing shame things like Mr. Micallef did? Obviously the answer is NO.

If you want us behind you Mr. Micallef you need to apologise to us Labour supporters and to those who have been offended from you in the last five years.

If you don't do this, you will be walking alone with no support from the Labour supporters.

So come on. Wake Up.
Daniel Cilia (on 5/8/08)
Mr Micallef got much less than HALF of the delegates vote, so he should understand that 519 of the 889 delegates he went to convince (some of them twice) to vote for him decided that they did not want him as general secretary of the MLP.
I'm sure that Dr Alfred Sant is smiling today. At the end it went his way... the leader of his choice + the secretary general of his choice = control of the MLP!
j.cutajar (on 5/8/08)
By the election of Jason Micallef as General Secretary, I think that trouble and "Klikkek" will again arose in the MLP. Now it's time for DR Muscat to show the necessary courage and be strong with him. He has done a lot of harm to MLP. Most of the Labour MP's are against him. He has the backing of less than 50%. He is one of the most responsible for the defeat in the last General Elections. Shame on him for not offering his resignation. We must do something so he will be removed. He is a MILL STONE. Let's start working to be removed.
Mario Farrugia (on 5/8/08)
Know what, Mr. Micallef? I simply don't believe you now. Period. Here's one less potential new vote for the MLP. As far as I am concerned, it's same rubbish... different day... (P.S. I could use different words... but they wouldn't be fit for publication).
r micallef (on 5/8/08)
i am certain that jason has learned from past mistakes and therefore will make a much better s g.lets not forget that the man was subjected to an intense campaign of character assassination but the delegates were mature enough to see through it.he got 370 votes ,the nationalist sg only had 60 votes need i say more
Robert Vagner (on 5/8/08)
Pitty, no other word to describe the political situation. Malta will remain with a one party and no serious opposition for another 9 years at least. Dr Joe Muscat, no matter what you say or do, we floating voters will not give you the chance with such people around you.
emmanuel zammit (on 5/8/08)
Mr Micallef should first thing tommorrow morning make some calls to start somewhere to cover up his mistakes!!
And he should learn from his mstakes of the past since next time we will not accept any more mistakes.
Paul Borg (on 5/8/08)
Well one cannot expect more from Jason....apparently he thinks that a fake smile is enough.......if he is happy we are happy. We will have five more years of mediocre opposition for what was promised to be good governance.

Who are these 900 people who make up the MLP delegates? Can someone come up with a survey of a typical cross-section of delgate members. e.g. their age, sex, profession, level of education, level of literacy, etc? I am not belittling them by these comments, I just want to understand why they are so determined to make the MLP's task at the next election as hard as possible. The international labour movement is a noble political organisation. Why is Malta's version on a suicide mission?
martin portelli (on 5/8/08)
Where are the ashes and sack cloth ? I suggest that every true labourite send an email to the new secretary general reminding him of his very crucial role in Labour's last electoral defeat every morning for the next 5 years. While its good to know that about 370 delegates are very happy in opposition , It is heartening to know that 467 delegates were very much against the man getting the post. An ounce of humility would have been more appropriate rather than attempting to pass himself off as the paragon of ethical consideration ! Everyone's general secretary ! Go tell it to the marines.
carmelo briffa (on 5/8/08)
Having Jason Micallef as a general Segretary it is not only a victory for Jason himself it is also a victory for PN Gonzi.....If they change the general Secretary I would have changed my mind by giving the MLP my vote but now I am more then convinced the one cut a donkey's tail it will always be a donkey. So what are the changes in the MLP>?
R Azzopardi (on 5/8/08)
If you want to be a real gentleman Mr. Jason Micallef, you should apologise to Michael Falzon, George Abela and many many others whom you have insulted with you attitude! Come on......Grow up......Kuragg......Apologise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GEORGE CUTAJAR (on 5/8/08)
SOME PEOPLE NEVER LEARN. I FAIL TO UNDERSTAND HOW JASON CAN BE SO SMUG ABOUT HIS 'VICTORY'.
AS I UNDERSTAND HIS DECLARATION IS CLEARLY ONE OF A PERSON WHO BELIEVES TO HAVE BEEN WRONGED AND SHOWS NO SIGN OF REMORSE FOR PAST CLASHES WITH THE LIKES OF GEORGE ABELA, MICHAEL FALZON, JIMMY MAGRO, LEO BRINCAT ETC.
JASON YOU SHOULD IMITATE YOUR LEADER AND LEARN TO EAT HUMBLE PIE. YOU NEED TO FIND THE COURAGE FIRST TO ADMIT YOUR PAST MISTAKES AND APOLOGISE FOR WHAT YOU SAID PUBLICLY AGAINST OTHERS IN YOUR OWN PARTY.
Corinne Vella (on 5/8/08)
"Whatever was said about me is forgotten." That's magnanimous, but insufficient. There's still no sign that Jason Micallef has understood that he behaved unprofessionally during the vote count in the last general election. Maybe that's the reason he's hasn't apologised publicly for his shortcomings.
J Farrugia (on 5/8/08)
Jason talk is cheap. work is difficult. Keep on your lousy 1 foot smile. We prefer you that way.
L. Aquilina (on 5/8/08)
It's not just amnesia that is wanting here... but a good look at the credibility rating!! Well done on the great disservice to the country MLP delegates.
Tonio Mallia (on 5/8/08)
WOW! BET EVERYBODY'S REALLY HAPPY TO HEAR THAT DOWN AT MILE END!!!

Adrian Cardona (on 5/8/08)
"I will forget all that was said about me during the campaign"
And what about what YOU said about other people Sur Micallef? Your insults to George Abela, Michael Falzon, Leo Brincat, Jimmy Magro and God knows who else will not be easily forgotten...least of all the insult to all Labour supporters when you ran away from the counting hall after boasting of a great victory.
Don't pretend to be the victim in this farce, NO-ONE believes you except the people who voted you back in.
Joe Vella (on 5/8/08)
Mr. Micallef you still do not get it. The problem is not forgetting what was said about you in the past, but will you take back what you said about others in the not so distant past.
