Heritage foundation takes over St Thomas Tower

St Thomas Tower in Marsascala has been entrusted to the heritage organisation Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna (FWA).

The deed was signed yesterday by Jason Azzopardi, Parliamentary Secretary For Revenues And Land, and Mario Farrugia, chairman of FWA.

Through the deed, FWA committed itself to restore the tower and turn it into a place of historical and cultural significance.

The tower, which was built by The Knights in 1614 during Grand Master Wignacourt's reign, is one in a series of four extant Wignacourt towers.

The site will be open to the public in the near future.

FWA now has 13 sites under its custody, three of which are open to the public on a daily basis, and another nine sites which are open to visitors by appointment.
