Government, GWU, to resume shipyard talks
Finance Minister Tonio Fenech is to meet a GWU delegation this afternoon at a meeting called at short notice following a GWU request.
Informed sources said the meeting was requested after the government indicated that the early retirement schemes for Malta Shipyards employees would be issued tomorrow.
GWU general secretary Tony Zarb told shipyard workers yesterday that the union was prepared to resume talks with the government - after they ended abruptly in disagreement last Friday.
The union is insisting that the schemes should not be issued before the buyer of Malta Shipyards and its plans are known. It has also called for job guarantees for the workers who do not take up the schemes.

the shame is on you mister. To think that these louts robbed the Maltese coffers of millions if not trillions of our taxes. 900 million which should have gone to medical and educational budgets. It would have been better as Dr Sant once said that the workers remain home and their pay sent to them by post. At least it would not make any further losses. So who is to be ashamed me or you? And it would be much better if all the assets (land and buildings) that are in the MDD be used for tourism purposes to generate profits for Malta and the Maltese nation. who is to be ashamed me or you? And it would have been much better if all those working at MDD be utilised in constructing tourism services at the MDD so that the docklands would remain profitable. and not loosing millions everytime there is work at the MDD. So who is to be ashamed me or you?

@J farrugia
Why all this hatred towards the Shipyard workers?
No wonder after all these years that the Nationalist Party has been fomenting hatred towards them.
And did not the present Government promise them that their jobs were safe and guaranteed just prior to the last general election?
How's that Gonzi for keeping your word which as we can all see is worthless?
Why don't you show the same resolve agianst the ILLEGAL immigrants invasion?

Minister Fenech, please make one thing clear to the GWU. They will have no job guarantees in the future. The government must not guarantee any jobs for MDD employees. The fact that the Government does not guarantee MY JOB, or anybody else's job, ( not even Tony Zarb's job as General Secretary of the GWU), I for one, DO NOT WANT THE GOVERNMENT, (my government because I pay taxes just like everyone else) TO GIVE ANY JOB GUARANTEES to the lazy (mob) MDD employees, or to guarantee their jobs at MDD. These workers are to be treated just like everyone else, no special treatment to these louts. So Minister Fenech let's go for some tough talking and if you are not good for such talkiing, leave your place for Austin Gatt. That's the man for Malta.
