Hompesch Road needs some trees
I don't know if Grandmaster Hompesch was an environmentalist or a tree hugger, but if he was, he must be turning in his grave right now for no other main artery in Malta is as barren as Hompesch Road, Fgura.
It is nothing short of shocking that in this day and age when everybody seems to be making the environment a national issue, one of the busiest arteries in one of the most polluted, noisy and inhabited areas in Malta is left without a single tree.
The irony of it all is that when we go to other European countries we look in awe at their beautiful, tree-adorned avenues which give cities and towns that much needed "green look". It's time to take action and it's time to protect our health; it's time our parochial local councils stop worrying about the venue of their next coffee morning and start worrying about the environment around us which determines what we, as a country, want to look like.
Make Hompesch Road green and proud.

I've been saying as much for years but I'm afraid I'm shouting at the wind. All one has to do is go to any European City to see trees and greenery adorn the streets,and yet on this Island few inner roads are planned with greenery in mind. Sliema is a prime example apart from the front.It is fact that the Maltese hate trees. I remember my father telling me years ago that unless a tree produces fruit or such like,the Maltese will tear it down. It wasn't so long ago that the countryside was covered with Almond trees and such like. A spectacular site in spring.

i cannot agree more with Mr.Cunningham & Mr.Gatt!! I wrote an article a few weeks ago regarding this issue. Probably my cries have gone through one ear and out of the other! Trust me....i've been saying the same things Mr.Gatt for YEARS - yet all I get is a partisan reply - full of pathetic excuses! Should there be more comments and no action, I would be more than willing to start a petition as a resident of this locality who is sick n tired of shabby environment and dirty-polluted air! :) steve

We need many more trees all over Malta. It doesn't seem to be on the priority list of the government though.
We have "beautiful" wide sidewalks in some places with empty flower boxes which could be enhanced by planting trees.
We need trees and we all know that besides enhancing the country, we'll gain healthwise.

Spot On Mr Albert Gauci Cunningham......I fully agree with you 100%. When is the local council or Government Depts going to do something about the bad situation. The whole of Zabbar Rd / Hompesch Road is shocking/shabby which needs some "greening " Also what about the round- abouts in this main artery...they need to be looked after just like other round-abouts in the north of the island. So much for the Environment..."Greening of Malta indeed "

I agree 100% with Mr. Cunningham. During my childhood I really enjoyed walking in the shade of the trees along Zabbar Road and Hompesch Road, and admiring the birds hopping around. Now, instead, when I travel from these roads I only inhale bad fumes, and suffering from the sun heat. It's about time that who is responsible takes action to counter balance the situation.
