Alternattiva Demokratika is insisting that it should participate fully in the discussions among the political parties on the reform of the electoral system and on the introduction of rules on political party financing.

In a letter to Speaker Louis Galea, AD deputy chairman Stephen Cachia said that between 1992-1996, AD had participated on a par with the other parties, both in the Gonzi commission for changes in the electoral system and in the Galdes commission on political parties' financing.

He said it would be an enormous step backward for democracy if only the two parties in parliament would decide the issue between them.

He said it is more important than ever for AD to participate fully in the discussions because the government of the day only commands a relative majority and represents less than half of the electorate.
