The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) are escorting a local fishing boat carrying 27 illegal migrants.

The AFM said that the Tweety came across the 27 migrants, all men, some 16 nautical miles south-west of Malta at around 2.48 p.m.

After the AFM Operations Centre received notification of the case from the Tweety, it immediately dispatched Victoria-Class Rescue Launch Melita 1 from its Maritime Squadron in Haywharf.

The rescue launch reached the migrants' boat at around 4.45 p.m., where it found them to be in good health and wearing life-jackets.

The migrants are expected to land at Wied Il-Buni in Birzebbugia shortly.

This is the second group of migrants to have come ashore today, after another group of 28 landed at Wied Iz-Zurrieq earlier today.
