Unions stress tax reform in MCESD meeting on Budget
Trade unions insisted with the government this morning that promises of reform to income tax should be introduced at the next Budget.
The point was made when the members of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) had a meeting with Finance Minister Tonio Fenech and Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said on the pre-budget document.
GWU general secretary Tony Zarb and UHM General Secretary Gejtu Vella both highlighted tax reform when they spoke to reporters afterwards.
Mr Zarb said he had also given an overview of the situation at Malta Shipyards.
GRTU director-general Vince Farrugia said not enough incentives were being given to boost business for SMEs. Tax reform, he said, would be important in that direction.
Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said said that at this stage the government could not give guarantees since this was a pre-budget document, and more meetings were planned.

I need to agree with Vince Farrugia + add the follwoing. To understand Small Businesses - Small Self Employed and even Smaller, all Employees - then Gov. needs to step down from up above and come on the ground to understand that he need to eases off the pressure on
1) NI contributions
2) Income Tax
3) Loads of Indirect taxes for anything and everything from the host of Authorities that have beens set up to justify their guaranteed salaries.
4) Elimination of automatically renewable employment agreements
5) A decent increase in minimum wage standards
The mid/low income workers or more than half the population 's living standards is going to move backwards not forward. I have recently been doing some social work and can assure Gov. that the sacrifices that some familes are making are unbelievable.
Although these people understand that Gov has no provision in his budget to finance Surcharge - Please at least give these people a decent wage increase to cover the Double Effect this will bring with it + Increase the lower income tax treshold.
Reducing the upper tax rates is not good enough!
