i think we should all blame ourselves for making mistakes whilst driving. its useless and pathetic to always blame the government! lets grow up guys.....

What a cruel twist-of-fate for this man! But, unfortunately....no matter the loss of lives, hardly anything is ever done. There are many more *accident hot -spots* around the Island. Just a few weeks ago another young man lost his life in Cirkewwa where others had done so previously, at the same exact spot! It is really a sorry state of affairs and laissez-faire attitude!

Two points
The actions by this man prior to his unfortunate passing away should be commended and if possible given some form of official recognition like 'Gieh ir-Repubblika'. He is an example for all of us.
Secondly, always blaming the state for accidents is really pathetic. I have passed throough that intersection a thousand times and was never close to losing control or close to having an accident. Let's accept the fact that accidents sometimes happen because us drivers make mistakes.

Why do we allways have to blame the goverment? If the roads are built in a way to curb overspeeding we shoot the goverment, , If we get speed camers we shoot the goverment, if we have wardens we blame the goverment, if we dont have anyone to blame but us we say thats what god wanted, is everyone else to blame but us and our selfishness?

While I agree that the intersection is dangeruos may I remid the authorities that the highest risk is the unbelievable BUSHES on centre strips including others areas and round abouts. You will find them allover Malta especially on latest upgraded roads! But who cares about repeated accidents. Now as usual after some accident and reports someone will trim them but they will grow again obstructing oncoming traffic within a month. This only happens in Malta that so call beauty is compromised with safety for any reason.

The Goverment should take more care on Mlata roads and driveing because drivers in Malta are getting Crazy of driving in the Roads, need more cameras, wardens and police on the roads [ never seen police on the malta road anywhere on the island- where are they ? what are they doing to help malta citizens ?] PLease Goverment I hate driving in Malta only this country you find crazy drivers, do something Mr Gonzi.

The area in question is very dangerous. I myself used to use that junction my self but not anymore since i`ve been involved in an accident myself. there are a lot of much less dangerous and no time or fuel wasting solutions of how to avoid that area. One thing I wish to add is that I had a discussion myself with a member of the local council in paola, to either close that enrance or at least put lights there to enable a safe crossing. He replied the council whng about it, instead some time later they just did a stupid road sign and parking cameras at the square. So safety is just a minor issue when compared to revenue

The problem is that while we are asking what are the authorities waiting for to close this junction since after all what it will take is to go up to the Santa Lucija roundabout and back, we are forgetting that the same authorities DESIGNED a similar (if not even more dangerous due to the speeds involved) junction in the Qormi/Mriehel bypass (Triq is-Sebh) where cars AND TRAILERS have to cross one whole carraige way to go to the Industrial Estate from the Attard bound carraige or vice-versa ...when all it would take would be to either use the Joinwell roundabout to go to Attard from the Ind.Estate and Canon Road to go to the Industrial Estate.

And there is also a similar situation in the zone in front of P.Cutajar / Oxford House with cars crossing hap-hazardly even both carraigeways to go from / to Mriehel , Infetti, Industrial Estate, etc

But of course in all these places there is no money-making speed camera buisness or yellow line parking involved, so since there is no financial gain, there is no need for action !!

Signs will not prevent drivers crossing this intersection. The authorities should have closed the intersection long time ago. Traffic should never be left to cross a busy double carriageway at any time of the day. What are they waiting for? For more loss of lives and injuries perhaps?!

May I add another question? Are cameras fitted in tunnels? I am fed up watching cars zig zag their way through the main tunnels. Incredible! In Malta it seems to be very macho to break all the rules of the road!

I M Dingli's comments are very appropriate. Only yesterday I was going up this road and the very same thought crossed my mind. Who is gaining what by not closing this intersection? Is it so painful for drivers to go up to the Santa Lucia roundabout and come back towards Marsa? As always common sense is not so common. When are we going to learn?

I agree that this intersection should be closed. It is very dangerous. Even if signs have been put up to forbid using the intersection in the morning rush, it is still being used.

My condolences go to this hero's family. I am reminded of my grandfather, Henry Gatt, who lost his life similarly. Apparantly a woman fell onto a railway track (when this service existed in Malta) and he jumped down and carried her to safety. He passed away from heart failure some days later. Very noble men more deserving of a memorial than some that exist. c busuttil Sliema

I saw the accident in question and I cannot really understand what the authorities are waiting for to close that access from the side road coming from Paola centre to the main road of Addolorata. Accidents happen on a daily basis within this junction but still they leave it open.

Moreover certain drivers have no respect whatsoever for oncoming traffic especially going up the hill since normally they just obstruct the lanes while they wait to cross the road and being a blind corner, when coming up the hill from the lights, you have no time to avoid a collision.
