Seven Croatian football supporters this morning pleaded guilty to causing incidents at Ta'Qali during a football match and were handed a one-year jail term suspended for three years.

The Croatians were accused in court of assaulting and threatening the police, disobeying police orders and slightly injuring a number of officers including Assistant Commissioner Josie Brincat and Police Inspector Mario Tonna.

Magistrate Antonio Mizzi ordered the immediate deportation of six of them. The seventh cannot be deported since he also holds Austrian citizenship, and Austria is a member of the EU.

The incidents happened during the UEFA Cup clash between Hajduk Spin and Birkirkara, which the visitors won 3-0. The police intervened when the Croatians lit a flare and some seats caught fire.
