MLP welcomes outcome of Malta-Libya talks
The Labour Party said today that it welcomed the positive reactions that came out of the high level meeting between Malta and Libya yesterday.
Party foreign affairs spokesmen George Vella and Luciano Busuttil said relations between the two neighbouring countries should be special, based on reciprocal respect, cooperation and activities aimed at bringing about mutual and regional benefit.
They augured that the declarations made at the talks would be translated into tangible action, especially in important areas such as oil exploration and the problem of illegal immigration.
With regard to oil exploration, the MLP spokesmen said the best solution would be an agreement for joint exploration and exploitation. The 1996 Labour government had made proposals on those lines, the spokesmen said.
On migration, they said that they recognised that Libya too had a problem of migration from the south.They augured that the Libyan authorities would cooperate with all those seeking to control this human tragedy.
Referring to the forthcoming talks between the two countries, the MLP urged the Libyan authorities to keep in mind how, over the years, Malta and Libya had always found each other’s help in times of need. This reciprocal respect should lead to fair solutions to the problems which existed between them.

@ Martin Buttner. You must be a young pup in that case may I remind you of usa attrocities carried out by their soldiers in VEITNAM. One prominent case is known as "The My Lia Massacre' Also there were incidents in Laos and Cambodia. I f the war crimes court in the Hague had any strenght half the usa goverment would be on trial, but the usa is above the law. Remember what happened in Iraq, whether you liked Saddam Hussien or not the country was stable but look at it now. Finally Palestine the massacres that occured and the killing of British troops by the jews in their so called fight for freedom.
@Martin Büttner
Thank you Sir,
I will stick to your definition. A quite good definition for terrorism indeed. For the sake of fair debate, I will debate the whole subject bit by bit, agreed?
Bombing planes:
Libyan Arab Airlines 114
Back to the 1970’s
On February 21, 1973, a Libyan Arab Airways Boeing 727 with 104 passengers was shot down by the Israeli Air Force. The aircraft was shot down by a pair of Israeli Air Force F-4E Phantom. Do you remember about this crash? How do you call this?
Few months ago
What about - How Israeli fighter pilots threatened to blast Tony Blair’s jet out of sky?
Mr. Tony Blair came within moments of being killed when two Israeli fighter aircraft threatened to shoot down a private-jet taking him to a Middle East conference in the belief that it might have been staging a terrorist attack and Hamas groups would pay for.
What do you call this act please?
Debate is still on, should you like!
Bombing planes, bombing discotheques, killing innocent people in order to de-stabilize a country. Isn't this terrorism?
We are not talking about Malta-USA or Malta-UK or Malta-Germany talks, but about Malta-Libya talks, and so terrorism activities sponsored by Libya!
But talking about terrorism in general.
Wouldn't you call the 9/11 events as terrorism activities?
@Martin Büttner
No, sir, this is not enough for me.
Can you enlighten me, what’s terrorism please?
Could you list few terrorism activities spnosnered by any of the ‘great’ power, say, the USA, UK or Israel?
p.s
My definition of great in this course goes in terms of barbarism!
Libya confirmed their responsibility for the death of 259 people onboard PanAm flight 103 on 21st December 1988 as well as 11 Scottish citizens of the village of Lockerbie.
Libya is also responsible for these acts of terror:
- 5th April 1986: Discotheque "La Belle", Berlin, 3 people die, 200 injured;
- 19th September 1989: French Union des Transports Aériens plane bombed in Niger, all 171 people on board die;
...
Shall I Continue?
Enough terrorism, Mr Zammit?
@ a.dalli:
Which country are you referring to as super power? Libya? Malta? Or my home country Germany?
Please note, that I do not agree to what many countries nowadays do (forget abot the past just because of oil and money). Too many people still deserve to get an apology from Libya.
@ Joanne Micallef
‘huge crises we are presently facing re illegal immigration.’ This is only in your mind
@michael Zammit
You are right man. The whole EU countries are running one after the other licking Gadaffi’s shoes
@ Martin Büttner
I guess you are confusing Libya with USA??
After all can you tell me what terrorism is?
Does it mean that Malta helped a country which has supported and financed terrorism?
And should terrorists and killers be respected?
The world is sick, and so is Malta. As soon as money or oil comes in, all what has happened in the past is forgotten.
Government and opposition agree to ignore the cruelties of the past. This is what MLP's statement tells us.
These daily senseless statements by Labour spokesmen after 20 years of honeymoon are sickening. We have been having about 3 statements a day lately, weekend niltaqha maghdom visits andd aily visits by JM, including a visit to the GWU in the heat of the transport strike. Incidentally the GWU's only statement regarding the strike was that the right to strike should be safeguarded, no condemnation of violence.
If this is the way JM is trying to impress those who did not vote MLP, which are the ones that Labour badly needs, maybe he'd better visit one of our beaches this weekend. He'll have a better chance of meeting a number of us.
If not, what is the government doing??
