Gino Cauchi, Chetcuti, withdraw from MLP secretary race
Gino Cauci and Joe Chetcuti have withdrawn from the race for the post of general secretary of the Labour Party, it was announced this evening.
The election is to be held on August 4-5.
They said in a joint statement that many party delegates had expressed concern that having so many candidates for the election could prevent the change the party needed from actually happening.
The two candidates said that out of loyalty to the party, they were withdrawing from the race.
In contrast to the race for the party leadership, where a candidate has to win an absolute majority to be declared the winner, the election for the post of general secretary is decided on the basis of which candidate wins most votes, even if that is not an absolute majority.
The remaining candidates are incumbent Jason Micallef and Keith Grech, Alfred Grixti and Joe Vella Bonnici.

G. Frendo, I hope you wrote that comment in a sarcastic way, otherwise I think you must be seriousy living in another Malta. You said it was Michael's Falzon fault that we lost the election? I don't think you know, what Michael had to endure during his 5 year as a Deputy Leader. And by the way Grixti decided t o contest for Sec Gen not because he was pushed to do so by someone but it was his only decision.

Am I the only one here with the feeling that jason micallef is probably going to win the post again??

I withdrew from the race ONLY in our party's best interest, not in anyone else's best interest. Clear??????

gino cauchi and joe chetcuti backed out for the interest of MLP.
For the better interest of the mlp party shouldnt jason micallef back out too?
I think he should have backed out after election.

I think that the MLP should reduce the number of delegates who have the power to decide who should be elected. With respect to all the candidates, personally I do not believe that if I am qualified, I have to be judged by some idiots, that have been stucked within the party's structure for nearly 3 decades.
At the end of the day some people call this democracy. Well democracy in the hands of stupids. The MLP's problem is structural, even if they have Tony Blair as a leader who was successful for the Labour Party in UK, their still be probelms for the MLP. I think with this attitude MLP is buried for years in the Opposition.

i clearly think that Chetcuti's withdrawel is a sign of support for J.Vella Bonnici who i think is the right man for the job due to his qualifications and past experiences in management.. we need ppl who know what they are doing in the party and not people who just have a good name for themselves.. we need ppl who can help us win the next election

I agree with Michael Catania. The party is being hijacked by different groups in our party and this is dangerous. Alfred Sant was the answer to this country's many problems. He was the shining star that guaranteed us a good future. Because of all the infighting we are now in opposition without Dr Sant as leader. It is because of people like Michael Falzon that we lost this election. He was against Alfred Sant because he wanted to be leader. He got his answer in the leadership race and now we need to make sure that his chosen candidate remains out and that we continue the legacy of Alfred Sant with Jason Micallef. let us not make the same mistake twice!

I am really amazed at the "generosity" of the conservative bloggers, offering advice to the MLP delegates on who is the most ideal candidate for the post of the Party's General Secretary.Surely they are showing a great disloyalty to their party. I mean I will not be presumptuous to nominate who their leaders should be. To any intelligent man, the qualifications required is the ability to promise everyone the world and then after election keep a straight face when you go back on those promises. As for those who still criticize Alfred Sant I ONLY HAVE ONE THING TO SAY " HE WAS TOO GOOD FOR YOU LOT"

Whatever you do with your vote is your business. Maybe you are one of those who wanted Alfred Sant to stay. Maybe you are also one of those who want Jason to stay. But keep in mind, the most important vote of all is the one for the general elections. I still have mine from the last two elections in my drawer. If people like you want me to continue with my collection that's fine with me. You , as a delegate ,must make the right choice for the good of the part and i assure you others like me will follow.

A big Prosit to both Gino Cauchi and Joe Chetcuti.
All contestants (Jason Micallef excluded) for the post of MLP General Secretary entered the race with the aim of unseating Jason Micallef. Knowing that they personally did not have a chance to do so, remaining in the race would only serve to re-elect him and thus defeat the scope of their cadidature.
There are two titans in this race namely Jason Micallef and Alfred Grixti and in view of this, my very good friend Keith Grech and Mr. Joe Vella Bonnici should seriously reconsider their position, notwithstanding the fact that they are two just as valid cadidates.
As far as Jason Micallef is concerned he knows very well that both he and the other four members of the Gang of Five were responsible for all the blunders which are listed in the Report on the MLP's last electoral debacle. Dignity and ethics dictate that he shold not only shoulder responsibilty verbally but also in a tangible manner namely by vacating the post and not contesting for it again. Actions speak louder then words.
On a personal level, I do not wish him any harm.

Yes both Mr. Cauchi and Mr Chetcuti did the right thing. I believe some contenders for other positions should do like wise.

Anyhting on earth possible to be done not to let Jason micallef win the elctions is highly welcomed.
To all delegates I pledge you all to force Jason Micallef out unanimously if we want that MLP wins the next elections. Otherwise live in the shadows for much more years to come.
Jaosn Micallef is a NO-GO.
Thanks Gino & Joe for your great loyalty.
Delegates should send Jason back from where he started ....selling plants or do teleshopping.

At last it seems that the MLP is finally learning its lesson from the string of electoral defeats. It is only with moderate leaders that the party can appeal to the floaters. The MLP now have a home run to elect Alfred Grixti as SG and get itself ready in time for the next national election. It is only by appealing to the likes of me that the MLP has any hope of one day governing this country. I look forward to the day when I can look at both parties and find that there is no radical element that scares me from one towards the other.
Jason Micallef coupeld with Alfred Sant were the best things that happened to the MLP from a PN point of view. Their consignment to history will be a national victory and the real beginning of a new era!

People are saying that they withdraw from MLP secreatry race as they put the party interest before their personal interest. But I might ask... Why did they enter the race ..and few days before election they abandon it.... They might have not entered the race at all!!!!

These two gentlemen have made the right choice. They have put the interest of the party before their own personal gains. They must be congratulated for what they have done. Everyone is crying for change, and these two gentlemen are doing their part to attain this change. Its not an easy decisiion after putting so much energy and work into such a campaign. The MLP needs more people like this, who are able to make difficult choices in the interest of the party and the country rather than themselves. Well done.

CAUCHI & CHETCUTI did the right action as they never stood one iota of a chance;the Battle is going to be between Grixti whom I favour and Micallef who I believe should respectfully realize that the supreme interests of the MLP almost supplicate that he does not contest this important post within the MLP.To date the MLP`s best GS has been Marie Louise Coleiro who literally used to pump all her energy into the Party at the MACINA.The Party must now restructure and you cannot restructure with a structure that has failed.
Grech & Vella Bonnici do not have the required stamina for such an arduous job which is why Micallef failed to cut out a successful job out of it. There should be an open discussion about
the role of the General Secretary within the new MLP - Micallef should gracefully bow out and Grixti confirmed.I write this in the supreme interests of the MLP as to me it will make no difference considering I appertain to a Liberal Democratic Party. But I am much preoccupied in the glaring lack of a seriously challenging Opposition. The Secretary General is the Party`s Heart! Emmy Alpha.

I said this before and I will say it again. George put the party in a position to fail and predictably they did.
Evidently, those that are just too lost chasing their illusionary quest for power are too short sighted to see that us here, the ones that actually make a difference (in votes); observing.
It is typical of this party that an unelected member has so much power. These guys resigned for one of two reasons. To help the others beat Jason or because he prodded them to do so. Either way shows that all along people who voted labour actually voted for the interests of one person alone.
As I suspected Joe (I doubt you are reading this), even though you never admitted, I knew not to trust the party. Sorry mate, but now at least my excuse has become official :)
This party is so damaged its gonna take a lot of convincing to turn it around.
You gonna need a lot going for you to try to beat DeMarco going personally to the airport and Austin handling that crisis :)

I am proud to have found that we have two such honorable men who put the interests of the party before self-interest. We need a proper change, not infighting caused by too many candidates for this crucial position. I am sure they will be recognised for their important contribution to party unity. With members like them and Joseph Muscat as leader, the Labour Party will continue to grow and develop in the right direction.

This is indeed good news.. I think that means that Jason Micallef's chances of being elected have been seriously hurt. It will make it easier for traditionally nationalist leaning people to consider voting for labour. Looks like Jason's public sniping of George Abela might be back-firing after all.

Mr C.Calleja i think the problem with the malta labour party has always been the mentality of it's delegates and the power which they like to have.. i do not agree with your statement especially saying that you will never give them your vote... you should always vote for who at that point in time is best for the party and not over their action.. if they think that the best thing for the party is for them to withdraw from the race then i think ppl should support that..
Maybe a change in the mentality of the delegates is what is needed by the Labour Party

Are you one of those delegates who insulted the majority of the labour supporters and the floating voters by not electing Dr. George Abela as the MLP leader last June?

Had I been a Labour supporter I would have felt that no matter what, I remain a loser.
Had all the candidates contested, chances would have been that Jason Micallef would have been elected - so I lose and the party loses.
Now two candidates have withdrawn ( or asked to withdraw?), so, I lose again because my party would have denied two legitimate candidates an even playing field to contest for GS.
Notwithstanding all this, I would still have already lost when Jason did not do the honourable thing and resign after March 8 after being so harshly criticized for his shortcomings.
Furthermore and to rub salt on my festering wounds, a proposed motion by more than 10% of the delegates to have the winner declared upon obtaining 50%+1 vote, was mysteriously shot down after 21 delegates 'withdrew' from the petition! - Democracy, my foot!
Such is the brand of democracy within the MLP, new beginning or not !
Makes me wonder what type of consultation took place between the red machine and Messrs. Cauchi and Chetcuti.
Some things don't change because there is no will power to change them.

MrCalleja you know who must be ashamed, well we do not really need to repeat. For me they did the right thing and they deserve all my loyalty for sacrificing their chances.
Well done Gino and Joe.

The less the candidates, the less the chances Jason Micallef is re-elected. Jason Micallef in my opinion did a good work however he could have done much better. Lashing out against George Abela and Michael Falzon apart from not using all the Labour human resources in the campaign and everything was done only by the leadership are his flaws. I am hardcore Labour supporter, and didn't find a space where i can contribute to the party. However I am confident that the delegates will do the right decision like they did in electing the Leader! However I must point out that this is not a 50+1 election, hence i urge delegates to support Alfred Grixti since I believe he is the best candidate and if votes are spread through the other candidates, Mr. Micallef has a great chance to be re-elected.
May the best one win!

Shame.
Dear Mr Cauchi and Mr Chetcuti i lost precious time reading your articles, proposals, e-mails and letters. With this gimmick you also insulted my intelligence as a labour delegate.
In the future you will never get my vote.
