Air Malta said today that in order to ensure sustainable all year round business, it has eliminated routes that were being served by one or two flights a week and has shifted the seat capacity to destinations that can support three or more frequencies per week.
Reacting to MLP criticism of its decision to stop services from Glasgow from November, the airline said it will support the destination through a new codeshare agreement that will increase the Glasgow operation from two flights a week to at least two flights a day. The codeshare agreement will also cover other UK regional airports offering daily connectivity to Malta via its London and European gateways.
“Air Malta is confident that it will replicate the Scandinavia success, whereby through the Lufthansa codeshare it has carried more traffic from Scandinavia via Munich and Frankfurt than its own direct service. Today the airline offers three daily flights to the Scandinavian capitals via Munich and Frankfurt.”
The airline said that while retaining its obligations to Malta’s tourism industry, it equally has obligations towards its employees and the country for a sustainable economic airline.
