Christian Callejas, a midfield player from Uruguay, arrived in Malta yesterday ahead of a trial with Hibernians.

The Paolites, who finished a disappointing seventh in the Premier League last season, are looking to strengthen their squad with the acquisition of two or potentially three new foreign players.

Callejas's CV features spells with home team Danubio Montevideo and Lugano in Switzerland but more significantly, he has also played for the Uruguayan national team in the past. The 30-year-old midfielder was a regular for Uruguay at the 2001 Copa America, won by Colombia.

Hibs have not retained the services of Nigerian Uzeh Edafe and Abade Fish, of Cameroon, after the two midfielders failed to leave their mark last season. Argentine Pablo Doffo, who also plays in midfield, is training with the Paolites but he has yet to sign a new contract with the club.

Unlike some of their top-flight rivals, Hibs have not made one big-name signing this summer as their top priority has been to solve their coaching dilemma. Hibs have called time on Robert Gatt's nine-year coaching tenure after the team's dismal performance in the league last season.

Malta U-21 coach Mark Miller is the favourite to take over from Gatt but the English mentor cannot begin his second spell at Hibs before September 6, the day after the U-21 team's final UEFA Group 10 qualifier in France.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Malta goalkeeper Justin Haber travelled to England on Monday to hold discussions over a possible move to an English club.

Last month, Haber was reported to be on the verge of joining Larissa in the Greek Premier League but the 27-year-old opted to bide his time in the hope of earning a move to England. Sources have told The Times that Championship side Sheffield United, with whom Haber had a trial last season, could be Haber's next destination.

Kurt Magro reported for his first training session with Msida St Joseph on Monday. The young Valletta midfielder joins Msida on loan for one year as part of the deal that saw Cameroon forward Priso Doding move in the opposite direction earlier this month.

Anatoly Tishenko, an 18-year-old Russian midfielder who has been playing for Valletta's youth teams in the past few years, is also training with Msida.
