Updated: MUT says it was not invited for launch of Teachers' Council

The MUT Council has expressed disappointment for not being officially invited to the launching of the Teachers’ Council earlier this week.
It said it had always pushed forward the idea of a self-regulatory organ for the teaching profession akin to those of the established professions. For over a decade it had stressed the importance of establishing a teaching council as a regulatory body for the teaching profession.
"As the originator and main promoter of the Teaching Council, the MUT fails to understand how its own council was not officially invited for this occasion. Although the MUT has reservations about the degree of autonomy and self-regulation enjoyed by Council, it has more the less welcomed its foundation as an important achievement in the history of education in Malta," the MUT said.
"It is highly striking that the Union’s contribution to the setting up of the Teaching Council has gone officially unrecognized and unacknowledged. This does not augur well for the developments in education since it is widely recognized that an active partnership between all stakeholders is essential," the union said.
The Ministry of Education said it was surprised by the MUT statement.
It said the Teaching Council included two representatives of the MUT and four persons nominated by teachers.
At the launching of the council only the members of the council were invited. The ministry said it could not understand why the MUT felt offended, adding that it would have expected the MUT to express its satisfaction over the setting up of the council.

Why are you all afraid of change?
The way I see it, the Council is there to provide support... the same support that should have been coming from the Education Department years ago!
I believe that everyone should be given a chance.

Mr Bencini - if you really care about the teaching profession, the MUT should never endorse such a council. What is the real purpose of this council???

Is it strange that the Teachers' Council is headed by a lawyer?
This is the same argument regarding the Ministry of Health,
where members of the profession expect one of them to head it.
But that only means that old unsustainable practices never change.

One of the main aims of the council is to "keep under review and assess education and training standards and the suitability of those who choose to teach";
And who is going to assess the suitability of the council members to do their job right?
Are we running out of teaching personnel that we have to resort to lawyers to do the job?

It seems that the Education authorities do not want the ever grumbling MUT to sit on the Council. We need positive attitudes and not negative ones, like the present MUT President who is always crying about the need to put policemen in the schools, that teachers are leaving the profession in multitudes. We do not need this type of attitude. Let's do something positive instead of bickering all the time. His time was up but the majority wanted him to remain. Bad luck for the whole MUT.

After Minister Cristina managed to create an unsustainable monster from the social services sector where in some cases it is better to stay home taking benefits rather then work know its the turn of education to collapse.
She will achieve the same results which are inefficiency and Bureaucracy
It should be obvious common sense that if teachers’ council is set up the chairperson should be a teacher and not a lawyer or an accountant.
I don’t understand how people can vote for such persons to be elected in parliament. Definitely there are people with more managerial skills within the PN today which can handle a ministerial position more efficiently and effectively then Ms Cristina.

What I find strange is that the chairperson of the Teachers' Council is a lawyer!!! Can you immagine the Chaiperson of the Lawyers' Council being a Teacher??
