The government has formally set up the Teaching Council in terms of amendments to the Education Act approved two years ago.
The council is being headed by Dr Edward Debono and includes representatives of the MUT, parents, the Education Division and the University.
Its role includes the granting of teaching warrants, the monitoring of standards and the investigation of complaints against teachers.
Education Minister Dolores Cristina at a press conference this morning underlined the importance of the council, which will also advise the government on educational issues.
She acknowledged that more teachers were opting to follow other careers, but said the trend was not alarming, although she would encourage more teachers to return to teaching.
The Education Act provides that the council will regulate the practice of the teaching profession in Malta, and in particular -
(a) keep under review and assess education and training standards and the suitability of those who choose to teach;
(b) advise the minister in relation to these standards, the initial and continuing training of teachers, proficiency, experience and qualifications required for holding and retaining of the teaching warrant;
(c) consider and advise the minister with regard to applications for comparability and recognition of teaching qualifications;
(d) promote and encourage initiatives which ensure a continuing professional training and development programme for warrant holders.
(e) examine applications for a warrant to practise the teaching profession and make recommendations to the minister on the award or refusal of such warrants.
